I think this may have been contributing to my 73 bus's slow start problem.
This wire goes from the ignition switch to the starter and the damaged section was about 8 inches from the starter terminal. I think the wire became cooked over time as its above the heater box. The green corrosion went about 3/4 of the way through the wire strands.
Amazing it worked at all. |

It’s a good bet that you’re correct. You should be able to splice onto good wire and replace maybe six inches. You’ll need to make a proper splice though or else it won’t last long. This is possible but won’t be easy _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

3M makes a good heat shrink splice connector. 12 AWG should be the correct size but having a quality crimp tool is the most important thing. |

Here’s a picture of the type of crimped I have. Not saying you need to go spend $70 but it’s worked well for me for about 15 years

I have a pair of old school Klein? or GB? 9 inch crimpers that have served me well. But if I were to make a loom with more than a dozen crimps I would upgrade. |

Thanks. I was able to crimp a new section of wire onto a fresh stripped section
with a new terminal end. |

Yes! I had to wait until 20w50 was on sale . I wasnt going to spend 56$ plus tax for Castrol. Starter sounds like a new car! Hasnt been this good in years!

This time of year you should not use 20W50 _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

I once blew a hose off my oil cooler with 20W/50 at -5C and I was able to get out of the bus, let it roll forward on the handbrake and use a dustpan and brush to sweep up the oil as it sat there on the ground going nowhere fast.. Like treacle. Now I use 10W/40 and I cant get the oil hot anymore either .. _________________ Ancient vehicles and vessels

I wouldn't even use that in the summertime. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I like to use a lap splice as that is just one less junction. Since the crimps to do this are not always available I just take an available crimp ring terminal cut the eye off and use the crimp. Slather the bare wire ends with dielectric grease, make the crimp and use heat shrink to seal it. Been doing this since the mid seventies with very good results.
When my daughter needed new ends on the battery cables on her Jeep Grand Cherokee, I bought an ~18" cable for 24v battery jumper, cut it in two and then used split bolt connectors to attach the new wire terminal pigtails to the original wires sealing them well with self sealing tape covered with electrical tape. Suspect the splices will last as long as brand new cables would have. |

5W40 synthetics make a great year around oil for these rigs, requiring no seasonal changes thus saving time and money. If you have a loose engine you can get 5w50 as well. |
