Everything went smoothly on the engine installation!! Fits right up and no issues whatsoever on clearance. Now I need to source a starter and that’ll be it! Excited to finally get this done after almost a year of trying to figure out how to get the engine in! |

Great.
So did you change out the starter bushing for 12v one? Or did you leave the 6v one in there? |

Cool! On your way. I bet you're kicking yourself for procrastinating so long
The tool I mentioned a few posts earlier arrived today, I'm very impressed with the construction, it has an expanding hub that clamps the drum, and well-spaced deep teeth for non-ferrous materials. It's heavy and feels very robust, this would stand up to several clearancing jobs. Bonus: it's even made in Germany. I'm anxious to do mine over here as well now. I will report on its performance.
Here are some pics...

I ended up leaving the 6v bushing in, I decided on utilizing the Autostick starter due to the ease of not having by to worry about a bushing, it’s a dune buggy so it won’t be a daily driver. Is it possible to remove the bushing with the motor mated to the transmission? |

It is possible with a tap to grab it. But since you are going to get an autostick starter, you can just leave it in there. It won't effect anything. |

Whilst I was cleaning out the trans, I noticed these numbers, does anyone have the ability to make sense of the stamp? Also, paranoia is getting to me, I’ve never seen this buggy move under power, and have heard rumors from the past owner that the trans may be bad or might be fine, what’s the best route to go in the offchance that I might need to get another trans? Is it possible to ship out to rebuild? Just curious what the best financial route (although I know with every project there will be copious amounts of spending). |

I decided to roll with the auto stick because allegedly the auto sticks have a higher torque and rotation rate according to my local VW shop, not to mention not having to hassle with bushings. It’s a dune buggy, so the aspect of reliability isn’t really a big deal in the aspect of it won’t be driven daily and worst case it can be towed until I can get another started (local vw shop said oreillys Carrys the auto stick starters). |

I picked up an autostick starter from autozone years ago. They didn't have one on the shelf, but had it within one day. I'm not worried about not being able to get another if needed either. I've never had a problem with the autozone one. It will probably outlive me.
The ability to not need the bushing outweighs any "availability" issue to me. |

I figured I’d post in this forum as it regards my buggy, anybody know of any decent tires on a 15 inch rim that are 14 inches wide? I’m trying to replace the old tires from the 80’s and am having a hard time finding a pair. |

When I clearanced my 6v transaxle I used a round nose carbide burr chucked up on a cordless drill -- something like this. _________________

The casting date code format is DD MM SY where DD is the day (two digits), MM is the month (two digits), S is the shift, and Y is the last number of the year. Your transaxle housing was cast during the first shift on the 24th of October, 1963. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

Thank you all! I was able to clearance the bellhousing and fit a 12v motor with ease! I am now planning on building another motor. I have never done it before so it seems quite daunting, I opened a new thread, if anyone has a “engine building for dummies” type of checklist for me, that would be greatly appreciated.
