Ill be sending my shell off for chemical dipping and painting soon, and for import/legal/registration reasons I MUST retain the original door sticker with no exceptions.
What's the best way to preserve this thing? Cut out with a dremel and get the bodyman to very very very carefully weld it back in after dipping? Can a new one with a matching VIN be manufactured?

Dipper says that if the sticker is there, it'll be destroyed. Has to come off ahead of time.
Replacement may be the play, but the safety pattern doesnt seem to be punched out on the replacements _________________ 1972 Super Beetle, Parked until adequate restoration funding is acquired in restoration!

You can try heat, maybe a hair dryer and if not a heat gun. _________________ Glenn

You're not getting it off in one piece, that's the point of the safety pattern. There is a company that makes them with the pattern and dots cut in, but I can't remember who. _________________ '67 Beetle L41

I don’t know about your US regulations but wouldn’t you get a problem “counterfeiting” a federally mandated ID plate?
I mean if it was that easy what stops people making these up to falsify stolen cars?

you either don't get that door dipped, or you carefully cut that section out and then weld it back. And then, not destroying the sticker with heat is the issue. I think carefully stripping that door by hand is the sensible choice, unless there's some reason the door absolutely needs to be dipped _________________ modok wrote:

It's just an ID sticker. You can buy replacements for new cars too. _________________ '67 Beetle L41

These stickers are on the door frame, so not dipping isnt an option either. Leaning towards the dremmel at this point, if it gets wrecked ill buy a new one _________________ 1972 Super Beetle, Parked until adequate restoration funding is acquired in restoration!

You have three other metal VIN locations, not having the door jam sticker isn't a deal breaker. When I was working at a Nissan body shop we had a vendor that made replacements for most makes (don't recall how far back), just had to verify the VIN. _________________ Pres. I've had decent success with a heat gun, hair dryer doesn't seem to get the adhesive hot enough. _________________ '60 Canadian Standard, '64 Bug, another '64 Bug, '66 Bug, '69 Sunroof Bug, '69 GT3 Bug, '71 Super, '72 Super, '73 Canadian Custom, '74 Love Bug, '83 Mexi Bug, '85 Cabrio, '94 Mexi Bug, '99 New Beetle, '02 New Beetle Turbo S, '03 New Beetle VR6. Just curious as to how you proceeded with this sticker issue.
My main concern would have been trying to find the VW of Canada sticker for the door jamb in a reproduction. |
