That is a really beautiful Ghia - and the Beetle ain't bad either.
I stole a pic of an aircooled and colour-matched Beetle some time ago.

My 30+ year old amplifier malfunctioned. Can’t find anyone to fix it so I got new.
Here’s the old picture.
Had to recover the amp stand etc.
Here’s the new setup.
More Watts really woke it all up. _________________ Volkswagen!

Due to my steering couplers slipping when I turned the wheel under load, I needed to replace the steering couplers. Seen here from above after the gas tank had been removed.
Off with the old:
On with the new:
The rag/rubber damper also had to be replaced: seen here before the nuts and bolts had been tightened:
After checking the everything is A-okay, the gas tank goes back in:
with one new hose:
Two and a half hour labour. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

It's been 8 weeks since the paint went on with the last two weeks spent assembling. Other than the CV's, all fun. It's all new or rebuilt with just a ground cable left to do. Used PU trailing arm and spring arm bushings. Very liberally greased with silicone PTFE grease. Other than that it's all OG spec.
The weird bends on the rear brake line was more to preserve the factory flare rather than cutting it down to size and botching the bubble flare.
I didn't like hanging front suspension with no weight on it. It bound the ball joints. A threaded rod and eyebolt pull's it up until it becomes a rolling chassis. It's reassuring using quality parts ATE, FAG, Meyle, Zimmerman etc. The values in the predictability of assembly. If something isn't pressing on quite right, I know it's my fault not the parts.
Great thread on the Type 3 forum on rebuilding the steering box. Immensely helpful.
This get bundled up and back onto the body work.

So the 71 is finally in the resto- process! Soooo….. have new rust parts for the lower fenders on order. They are in Frankfurt, awaiting a plane ride to the states. Funny but no matter hard I search, I can’t find a smiley face remotely close to how excited I am for this restoration!!! _________________ 1770 DP Bad ass heads dual weber 40mm 010 headers and glass pack. Drivers side rear quarter area repaired.
Typical to many Ghia's it didn't look too bad from 10 feet away.
Surprisingly the inner bumper bracket was sound but the rest either paper thin or non-existent. The rusty bit on the valence I patched after I had the inner bumper bracket replaced.
Epoxy primed and seam sealed. I'm not certain what the oblong hole is for on the wheel well is for but will fashion a rubber plug for it later.
The panels were from Jopex. The fit was pretty much perfect. The only issue was the indent for the bumper had too large of an arc to match the squarer bumper.
Primed and ready for the finer finishing at a later step. _________________ 73 - Ghia Cabriolet, currently under resto

Likely a tooling remnant from the earlier bumpers thru '71, to attach the front bolt for holding the front end of the bumper side "spear". Yes, a suitable plug with a thin outline of seam sealer will be sufficient.
Nice work on this repair. |

Thanks Rome. Good to know what its purpose was. Even better to know I can safely plug up a source of trapping water. _________________ 73 - Ghia Cabriolet, currently under resto

I've had the engine out for a bit now. (the 1915 pulled studs so I made a 1641 from parts-on-hand)
In a strikingly uncharacteristic move, before installing the 1641 I took a breath and remembered to correct the alignment of the decklid latch while it was accessible from inside the compartment. Huge personal-growth moment.
The decklid actually latches-shut now for the first time since the paintjob over a decade ago. _________________ '71 Ghia coupe |

Just got my seats from the upholsterer.
These are for a 1962 Pacific Blue coupe with ice blue vinyl and turquoise cloth inserts. The vinyl and cloth come from SMS. At the time when I ordered that cloth SMS did not have correct turquoise available. So, I decided to dye them by myself.
I gave some written instructions for the upholsterer on how to imitate the details of the original seat covers as close as possible. I think he did quite good job:

Those look great!
Looks like you have a good upholsterer.
The good one I used to know, sadly is gone to the gods. _________________ Volkswagen!

First ride of the season. Went for an eight mile drive. She's far from finished, but she's drivable. I was excited that the engine started easily and ran flawlessly. Made for a great day.

Chasing an exhaust leak I decided it's time for an exhaust refresh. Only broke one bolt.

Replaced the points, condensor, rotor, and cap today. Then it just WOULD NOT START. Checked the points gap a hundred times. Checked coil voltage. Couldn't figure it out. So I started replacing parts with the old parts. Finally got to the points, and it fired up on the old original points. The new ones were NOS "Ikar" brand. What crap parts. _________________ -Andy-

Finally fitted LED's to the taillights so people can see them.
