Hey everybody,
I know there are posts about what your oil pressure should be, and how the warning system works, but I'm having a weird diagnostic issue, and just want some feedback before I move forward.
Background: My '90 GL was killed by my bro. in law 5 years ago, overheated the snot out of it, cracked heads, melted thermostat housing, etc. Finally got enough capital to buy a reman longblock from GEX, which has been great so far.
Everything was pretty happy (Other than cooling, fixed that w/new radiator), except I accidentally broke the high pressure switch on the back while tightening the bolts on the water pipe right there.
I ordered a new switch from GoWesty, along with a new wiring harness, and installed both, light stopped coming on, Yay!
Then I let the van sit for a week while I was out of town, and suddenly the oil light started coming on above 2000 RPM.
So I put an oil pressure gauge on it (on the side port, my fingers wouldn't let me get it on the back port), and my results were pretty happy:
Idle, cold : 46psi
2000rpm, cold : 50psi
Idle, hot : 35 psi
2000rpm, hot : 38psi
So, it seems like the oil pressure is ok, so it must be something wrong with the warning system, but it seems odd the brand new high pressure switch would go bad so quickly.
My question is, is there any reason that the pressure would actually be high on the side port and low at the back port that I should be concerned about, or do I just buy a new high pressure switch and figure that must be the problem? |

Oh, I know they're not GoWesty, but I inspected it when it arrived, and everything's been pretty happy, so far. Has the AMC heads, good compression, etc. The only thing that bugged me was that they put the engine>transmission mounting studs for the manual transmission on, when they knew I had an automatic and they had put the flex plate on.
The harness is brand new, and while the low pressure switch is old, it should be that it's fine, because the light doesn't come on until you go over 2000rpm, which according to GoWesty is when the system starts paying attention to the high pressure switch.
I'll just suck it up and try another switch, I guess.
Thanks! |

Have to agree with Mr. Dave, here: the sensor or its wiring. If your pressure gauge is good you should agree too. _________________ The wise man learns from history, the fool from experience.
