wow talk about bringing back an old thread. is this car still around, and what condition is it in? id like to see the finished product.
dont ever run the AC is all ill say. leave it there for OG purposes. thats it. it will toast a 40 hp in no time flat. the motor simply wasnt made to take that kind of load. it had its hands full moving the car. |

Certainly a sweet find dude! As for getting the a/c compressor rebuilt along with any other hard to find a/c related parts, pick up a copy of Hemmings Motor News. In the Services section I am sure you will find several people that can do that work for you or provide or have made the necessary parts.
Last year I looked at a 67 VW Sunroof sedan that was sitting under several inches of dust in a warehouse in Chicago, very orginal with a number of period aftermarket accessories. And it had that smell we all love. I wish I coulda taken it home but already have a project going plus I was getting ready to move across the country, so it was not to be |

Oh my gosh !...I dont mean "pathetic" in a bad way, but being jacked up, wheels off, all apart...juxtaposed to the '67 right next to it, yeah, it is a little "pathetic"!

Well, here's the latest... up on jackstands and looking rather pathetic . Oh well, good things to come! (Yes, I removed the amber signal lenses - which are PERFECT - and the glove box) I'm taking things apart, cleaning and setting aside until all is ready to put together again.

Doesn't look pathetic to me! Original paint is the best! It looks very clean and straight.

That's correct! It is the lack of coolant OIL that causes problems with running one without "charge"

Thanks for the A/C info, Chris. As a precaution I removed the drive belt to the A/C just after I got it home. I have heard that you DONT want to run the compressor without it being charged up! I will need to see if I can find someone who can rebuild this compressor with new seals. I have no idea where to start my search for that. I dont want some fat-head to f it up because they dont know what they are doing! I was happy that the blower works on all three speeds...that's a plus!
As for mongoose22988, I found it in TheSamba classifieds. I always keep an eye out there as well as TraderOnline.com and eBay for new and interesting "toys" - though eBay has a lot of crizap that's touted to be a lot more than it is to someone who knows what to look for in pictures. I certainly dont know everything, but thanks to this site (the forum, especially) I now know what to look for in a good bug and I ask if I dont! _________________ -Kent (BaT "daleallen")

|

My father worked in refrigeration (Whirlpool) for years and over time I picked a few things up from him.
On your AC, you do not HAVE to use R-12. You can use 134-A or a new product called Enviro-cool or Dura-cool, they are the same product (the enviro- and Dura cool) and are essentially propane/butane (the same stuff you put in Zippo lighters)
The key is that you have to vaccum down the entire AC system, refill the coolant oil and then put the new coolant in. YOU CAN NOT MIX COOLANT TYPES!!!!!!!!!!! That will destroy your system!
R-12 is the coldest coolant that man has invented yet, it, however, causes testicular cancer (true!!) 134-A was R-12's replacement, it does not cause testicular cancer but wrecks hell on the ozone and environment.
the answer to these problems is Enviro-cool (Propane/Butane)
Just FYI, the flash point of Propane/Butane is higher than gasoline so if your worried about that, you actually have more to worry about with that tank of gas in the front compartment than 6oz of propane!
I agree with the earlier post that you will probably have to replace your system seals and the expansion vavle is probably stuck.
Here is another tip, DO NOT power up your AC compressor until you are sure that:
A. the coolant oil is at a sufficient level
B. the system is "flowing" properly (expansion valve not stuck)
If these two things are not met, you WILL burn up that ultra rare AC compressor!
It is OK for the compressor to spin with the engine, just do not turn on the AC switch that power the compressor.
I am happy to answer any more Q's you have about AC (that I can)

| Got our '64 Beetle in a package deal. Buffed it up, looking pretty good now. Original owners manual inside, all paperwork in the glovebox. Horn was stuck on, bad ground I believe, haven't had the time to troubleshoot it though so I unhooked it for now. It was appraised at 10k in Fort Collins, Colorado and we are selling it for 7500 now. Want someone who will finish it and keep it, to buy it. Don't have the room for it here where we are. Seems we are the third set of owners of the little fella. 5k on rebuilt, 109k original on body and frame, rear bumper mounts are rusted out, nothing else wrong with it. Headliner (no tears or rot) has little square German and Italian advertisements all over on it. Was told the Beetle about 90% complete. All original except for paint. Original color, just MAACO'd three years ago with clear coat in and out. Beige. Danged nylon whitewalls are sure hard to handle on these Colorado roads, lol..No rust on the floorboards or outside either. Cool site here. Thanks. |
