Is my steering column missing something?

Nevermind, Joel was right. The little plastic bushing was shattered into a million little pieces just sitting down in there. I cleaned it up, inserted the new one, and no more free play. Thanks guys Cool

Ordered a bushing for my steering column. Was 12$ for a small piece of plastic and it didn't fit! After further examination, I saw a clip that seemed to be out of place down inside. How do I take the steering column apart further to investigate?

Do a search for the horn problem - it is an odd circuit - you will find your answer. i have my switch pod off if you need me to take a pick of the wiring connectors

I figured out the spring. It went inside the metal part of the windshield wiper switch.

I'm still having issues getting the wiring corrected. I thought I had it, didn't think to look at the wires I'm connecting to and matching up the colors. However, now my horn continuously goes off as soon as I turn on my bug. I unplug the turn signal wires and it stopped. Before that, I unplugged the horn from the front panel of the steering wheel, but that didn't do anything.

Does anyone know the actual name or part number of that W clip for the turn signals? I mine as well put one in there now instead of having to take the steering wheel off again but I can't find it.

ninian - did the spring maybe come off your steering wheel? i just looked my switch housing over and i see no springs

I've recently had to replace the electrical part of my ignition switch and while removing the turn signal switch, the wires came loose from the plastic clip and now I can't find a diagram showing which order the wires are to be in. Can anyone provide a photo of the order of wires as well as if they should be on top or bottom? There are six wires. I'm pretty sure the brown ones are all in order but the black and green and the black and white ones are the ones causing me issues. Since plugging it all back in, my generator light comes on and my gas gauge won't work. I'm sure it's just a crossed wire. Thanks all for the help in advance. I also have a 1974 Super Beetle.

Side question, I have an extra spring. It's about half an inch long, quarter inch wide. I know it came out of the steering wheel column, but I can't figure out where it goes.

If you hunt around under the carpet you will probably find it.

Trouble is if it;s actually fallen out it means one of the plastic hooks has probably broken which is new turn signal switch time.
You can replace them with second hand bits but its a bitch of a job and all it does is the self cancelling part

That spring clip is part of the self cancelling mechanism for the turn signals.
The little plastic hooks break off and the spring falls out.

I was forgetting yours would be a 74 taper shaft so no circlip.

Just pull that grey plastic spacer thing you can see slipped over the shaft out and then you will be able to see the bearing underneath.

That bushing sits in the gap between the bearing and the shaft and it can be a PITA to get in as it's a tight fit.

Its a 1974 super beetle. Yes, I expected it was a bushing not in place or something. Joel, You said that part of it was still in there? Do you know where I can get a new one?
