Thanks for the pistons! Got it all back together and put about 70 miles on the car today!
Got the valve seat re ground replaced all the exhaust valves and springs. Replaced the cracked piston and rod also. Finally got to drive this pile today and it was great! Been a long time !!!!!!

Yep....the spring was the root of the failure....that sucks. Don't get time to come to the vintage forum too much but your thread caught my eye. Just not much call for vintage work in our area or I'd be doing more of it if I could.
Hope you can grab some new or NOS springs for that thing so you don't have a repeat performance. Sound like someone stuck a twig in the fan before it broke the head off? That was my experience with a broken spring before. Anyway...good luck and glad you found some new pistons.

Whoever built the motor used all new stuff except the springs. The valve springs had some minor pitting in them and looked to have been used. I'm thinking the spring broke, rocker arm pushed the valve in and had no way to return itself to the seat. After a few times of smacking the piston the valve broke, and was then wedged between the head and the piston. |

I wonder the same thing. How does a rebuilt engine with "new valves..." have a valve "head" break loose in the cylinder and imbed itself half way through the piston in 10 minutes of running??? |

What was the problem? Deck height too close? Connecting rod come apart? Just wondering cause I'm building a very similar setup right now. _________________ 64' Pearl White beetle, type 113 sedan. Purchased in Hamburg Germany, driven for a year via vw tourist program, shipped to CA in 1965.

Got the motor timed, and carbs sync'd. Ran nice for about 10 minutes then locked up. Tore it down today to find the head of #4 exhaust valve halfway through the piston. |

Weren't they just some ghia elbows? The Australian setup you may be thinking of were actually curved intakes using side draft carbs. These used a regular thin line air cleaner. |

Jake: Im trying like hell to get it done for bugout! Gonna be some late nights this week! I like the filter ideas, I have been debating getting the old school style elbows from an austrailian carb setup i've seen. Cant remember the name of them though. |

Nice build!
Have you considered finding a pair of period filter housings that would allow you to run modern filter medium, be it K&N or similar?

here's one solution to this - link |
Very nice solution! And it carries a period look...

Nice build!
But don't ruin the engine by running simple mesh 'airfilters'. Those screens are only used to keep the engine from inhaling rocks, squirrels, and small children, NOT for filtering sand, silt, and larger micron abrasive particles from the air.
Have you considered finding a pair of period filter housings that would allow you to run modern filter medium, be it K&N or similar? Maybe a pair of early Mann or Knecht filters from a 356, or modified oil bath filters from a 36 or 40 horse motor that have more performance-oriented filtering medium inside - with the airhorns/velocity stacks hidden inside.
