[quote="Madeouttaglass"]I got it running a couple of days ago. It sure felt good to test drive it after 2 1/2 years of being apart. Had to get the shifter adjusted yesterday. Today I hope to finish the carpet that arrived a week or so ago. Still a good size list of odds and ends to do before I put it on ebay. I wish I could have played with it for a bit, but life put a new path in front of me. I don't want to know how many cents an hour I will get paid for my efforts.
.resurrecting an old thread. Wow I am so bummed after reading thru all this that you didn't end up getting to keep it. I wanted to check in & see how it was doing & any other changes you added while running it. I am nosing around looking for a dead syncro & may have found one... Its seems the best combo of all the things I like. VW, Subaru, off road , Plus a safe space for the pup! Thank you for all the info! I who or where can I find the "Hookadoguy" & his treads. Thank you again! |

A peak at Burley's adjustable, pivoting rear suspension. It feels like he did good on the spring rate.
A better shot of the rear.
And some of the front.
A better shot of the front. There's about 8 vendors parts showing here. It took many nights of searching to find OEM ball joints. T3 supplied the bushings, Burley the OEM bearings and seals. New (non Chinese) Lobro axles, twin pot Audi vented discs, all new stainless steel hard and flex brake lines,.........The parts that are gold zinc plated are the only stock parts under there.

Time to bring this thread back to life. I had to ignore the Syncro for a number of months as I got life organized on the left coast. I've been at the beast every day for about a month now. Last year I had temporarily put in the interior and driveline just to trailer it all across the country. This month it all came back out to be assembled properly.
It's hard to say how much longer until it is finished, but that day can't be too far off now.

Any issues with this bedliner being such a dark color? Normally propane tanks legally need to be a light reflective color due to the heat absorption properties of dark colors. I even hear folks will flat out refuse to fill tanks that are a dark color.
The propane tank takes such a beating right behind the front wheel that I sprayed it with Rustoleum bedliner. I've used this a bunch of times and it holds up very well.

I'm sorry too. Lots of work designed for my own use. I'l also be losing a bunch of "my enablers" in this cross country move. All the shops and guys that have taken me decades to meet will be 3000 miles away from my new house. But, that said, the house we bought is something special too. It would be harder to replace this house and it's incredible location in the redwoods and on the ocean than it will be to build another camper. As I said earlier, this Westy was built for trips out west and it would have been great. Instead, I am bringing the Unimog. I have to finish the house and it's huge bed will help haul much tonnage to Shelter Cove (albeit slowly). Who knows, maybe the Mog will turn into something like this when I'm done.:

Got a few things done today.
Burley's rear vented disc brake kit. Girling calipers with parking brake feature.
I opted for his pivoting rear spring kit too.
I fabbed up these sliders while I was making the rear bumper a while ago.
I also made these rear bumper supports. I had planned on hauling a TW200 off the bumper hitch but wanted some more strength than just two bolts through sheet metal. This heavy wall square tubing also spaces the engine cradle down to match the front bumper mounts/ differential/ lower front suspension/ crash protection intermediate frame.
The front of those bars is cut back to accommodate the rear shocks.
The bigger picture of Burley's work.
Nice to see it sitting on the new suspension.

Making some good progress on installing Burley's rear suspension, some interior, plus odds and ends.
I was hoping that this would be my last Westy rebuild. I did a '75 in '91, a '76 in '12 and now this '87. When I bought this syncro a year and a half ago the plan was to build it for trips out west. There were no plans on moving. Now I've bought a 95% finished house out there. Plenty of expenses in both the move, and finishing of the house. No matter how I do the math, my move would be much easier if this one gets sold also.
I've bought everything I need and will continue the build. With some luck there'll be another one some year soon. At least I won't be freezing my ass off while I work on it. _________________ My 1987 Syncro Westy build:

Thanks Bill, nobody wants to see it finished more than I do. Granted, it has not been worked on every week, but it sure has taken up a ton of my time since I bought it about 1.5 years ago. Just the time driving to shops, vendors, and the like adds up. _________________ My 1987 Syncro Westy build:

I brought it home from the paint shop today. New pop top tent, Burley rear suspension and rear discs, interior, engine and transmission are on the to do list. Easy peasy. Should be out next week, right?

Just letting you know.
I would keep the jack stands under the subframe and not turn the wheels with them on the ground.
Looks really good. |
