Make a mould of the shape you need with masking tape.
Fill with GRP filler. File to final shape.
Anyways the bus preferred to be like Joan Collins.
Not get any older/mileage.
Confuses the powers that be =a good thing.
Ps that's the only use for lego apart from inflicting pain on parents bare feet.
I built real cars cheaper than a child built a lego one.

Know that the early odometer has a metal case that needs different versions of the solutions above. I designed and 3d printed a slide-in retainer for the early odo.

The shaft retainer can be installed before failure to keep it in place. No reason not to do it.

Here's my fix.

I used a medium sized paper binder clip. I broke one of the legs off and then used a pair of tin snips and gently bent the modified leg to fit into position. I notched the metal such that it would fit under the screw.

I'm hopeful I didn't mess up my speedo when I removed/re-installed the needle.

First post since I got back into the Westfalia life 3 weeks ago. Probably could have chronicled my trip home from Portland, OR to Indianapolis with the new Westy, but alas.

Because the eBay seller of this fine automobile was less than honest, I ended up with a van with (among multiple other things, of course) a non-operational odometer.

Anyway, throwing my hat in the ring with this odometer 'hack' and found a slightly more 'stable' bracket (hopefully) utilizing a 'command hook' bought at any walmart/hardware store/home good or office supply store.

My first idea was to use this style hook that the previous owner of my Westy had stuck to one of the cabinets

but i found it was severely lacking in 'support' to attach it to the main housing of the odometer.

i was RIGHT at the point of applying epoxy to it when i had a second thought about PERMANENTLY attaching what is essentially a 'ham & egg' repair to my new friend.

I decided to look at other options and found a hook that the wife had stashed away in a junk drawer

and I got an idea for a mo' betta bracket as seen earlier in this thread

It's lexan plastic and extremely tough for the size/stature...about 10-15 minutes of tedious sanding/test-fitting after I had cut it from the main hook backing, and it was really starting to look like something useable. I sanded both the area that will be making contact with the housing, as well as the area on the top of the 'bracket' so the screw would sit flat on top and not cause any odd torsion issues, and would also have a nice direct line of pressure around the attachment point so it didn't shift in the mounting location.

I utilized one of my 'spare' curtain rod track screws because it's (almost) the perfect length and had just enough bite.

Drilled out the end of the bracket with what I believe ended up being a 3/32" drill bit, and screwed the bracket to the housing. The screw was touching the housing when i put it in all the way, so I took it back out and ground down the tip (just the tip, hah).

And viola!

Ham and egg odometer operation was a success!

Onto the next project...but hopefully minimizing the ham and egg approach moving forward. But when it came down to trying this or spending $225 on a speedo rebuild, I opted to give it a whirl.

Peen the shaft at the location of the aluminum gear. Do not go further than that gear because you will cause the number gears to not to slide on the shaft.

I have an ‘85 Vanagon, the odometer is not working b/c the aluminum gear is loose as well as the plastic gear of the first digit on the odometer. Which gets hung up on the aluminum gear.. and of course slides the shaft out that the green gear is on...any thoughts on how to secure both the aluminum and first gear to fix this issue.. I have secured the shaft of the gears from sliding but it’s not fixing the real issue..
I was thinking I could place a washer of some sort to hold the spacing? Any thoughts?

Dikes is what I use to get the gear to hold. Again, making those marks in the wrong portion of the shaft will cause the plastic gears to stick, not good. Making the marks too deep also causes issues getting the shaft thru the gear.

There is no easy way to get the gears to move back to the right position. You're a tooth off and you just got to pull that shaft back out and realign them.

OK, pushed the shaft out with a drill bit, came out relatively easily. Put a small crimp, more like a blemish, on the end of the shaft. Upon putting it back in 2 of the numbers moved to halfway in the window. Is there an easy way to straighten the numbers back up? I have been trying for a while now and have no luck.

Thanks
Chris

So, more thought on this. I am assuming if I get a reasonably close diameter rod to push the working axle out of the odo from the GREY gear end, give it a squeeze with my jewelry dikes at point of contact with the gear and re-insert the axle, I will not have to do anything with the nylon gear at the other end as it seems snug right now.

Just exactly what is supposed to keep that axle in place originally?
I have a speedo that the whole axle walks out and it slips below the gear.
The driven gear is tight on the axleshaft.
