there is no need to remove it, as it isn't doing any harm being there.
the center of the tab melts out if the temp exceeds the heat rating of the tab. the tab doesn't fall off the case if overheated. that's why it gets epoxied to the case.
a new heat tab:

Thanks guys.
I'm not surprised if it indicated that the engine had overheated at some point. I reckon it had been run hard.
It had poor quality tinware and the bottom tinware was missing entirely.
It's been rebuilt since.
Is it safe to remove it or is it best left where it is? I couldn't see a hole from the inside of the sump, but would they have drilled the case to fit it? _________________ Andy

it is a temp warning thingy. some re-builders used them back in the day. I don't know if anyone uses them anymore. it was a warrantee deal .the center would blow out? if the case overheated. like if you ran without a fan belt or abused /neglected your motor. I haven't seen one in years. never seen one blow out? not sure how it told you it got too hot? I think revco? used them.? years ago.

i agree that is a heat tab, and it looks like the center melted out of it (overheated). difficult to tell from the poor pic.
that is the location where GEX typically puts them. |

My engine case has this disk on the left hand side rear-most wall of the sump. It's glued in place with what looks like permatex. It looks to be a plug or bung. If there's a hole behind it, the hole doesn't penetrate through in to the sump (confirmed through pictures from when I rebuilt it).
I'd assumed that it was covering an oil gallery, but I've realised that it lines up with the sump, not the oil galleries.
Anyone know what the disk might be for? The case is a genuine VW dual-relief case, part no. 211.101.102D prefixed with a 40 before the VW logo.
This engine is a bit oily in this pic because it's from before I rebuilt the engine. _________________ Andy
