Fantastic news Dave! So glad to hear it made it so quickly, and that all keys are compatible.
All my best,
Thayer |

Perhaps not for a young guy like you but I’m afraid this may be a symptom of my developing CRS syndrome. Not going to find a replacement cap in the middle of Utah..

Sorry to hear this , but glad you and the van had a good trip.
It always amazes me how different the landscape is: East = trees, trees, trees, and more trees! West = unobstructed horizon line 500 miles off in the distance.

Now, if this was an original VW keyed cap......I just might pay decent money for one!
I loved the VW cap on my 86! |
FWIW, the VW caps are/were made by Blau. The factory-installed van caps, oddly, used the ignition key, unlike the Jetta I and Cabriolet, which used a separate key.
When I had to buy a new cap for my '90, I eventually remembered that a copy of its Blau key should be added to the stashed ignition spare... just in case. _________________ 1986 Cabriolet: www.Cabby-Info.com

I only used the spare set because I feared if I turned off the Van would it still run as well on a restart?........... |
Dave,

Pro Tip for those traveling with a spare set of keys:
If you don’t pull the set you use for driving when you fill up, you risk driving away from your gas cap that you removed with the spare set…

What I don't get, is, WHO takes a photo of a RANDOM gas cap?
Thayer, do you have "future vision"?
Vanagonauts live in such a wonderful crazy world!
Now, I hafta go and put my spare ignition/gas cap key in a more accessible spot in/on my van so I can leave the van running IF/WHEN I have running issues.
Hopefully, IF/WHEN those running issues appear, I'll remember to put the gas cap inside my van!!
Or, hope that Thayer is following in my tracks..... |

This is so cool! Love to see a happy ending to this one. |

This community is great .... they come through for me in 2016.
We had Alternator issues before reaching Dawson City, Yukon over from Alaska. On the way from there down to Whitehorse, I was invited to drop by a guy's place for help.
We were on our way in less than an hour!
Dave, I carry two sets of keys also ... look at my post above at 3:47 pm yesterday. (there's really another story in that story) _________________ '84 Vanagon Tin-top, ALH TDI, two trips to Alaska, 2014 & 16. 1989 Tin-top unmolested.

The classic “Kobyashi Maru” scenario…
If I take the gas cap but is not Dave’s, then the owner coming back looking for it is screwed.
If I leave the gas cap but it belongs to Dave, someone else might bag it or trash it.
VW did in fact “reprogram the computer” (Star Trek fans will get the reference) when they made the ignition key and gas cap key the same. Hard to drive away if your ignition key is on the pump... |
You take the cap and leave a note!
