|
|
| Hullo , I picked up a set of 16x8 ET62 rims last night and am off to Fred Goeske tomorrow for a set of adapters . The tires are 255/65 . Anyone rolling on these ? The Mercedes # is 1634010202 . They are five spoke , kinda like Range Rover wheels . Am I way off on these ? I spent $150 on them so they can always return to Craigslist . Any input ? Thanks , Julian[/img]http://www.mercedesforum.com/upfiles/20964/2C3A9A93682645F68828CB2983660C36.jpg[img][/img] |

Are you putting them on a 2wd or a Syncro? _________________ "Sometimes you have to build a box to think outside of." - Bruce (not Springsteen)

I just installed a set of those onto a Syncro a couple of weeks ago. We used a 30mm adapter which put the effective offset at 32mm. The tires were 225/75/16 Kumho MT KL71. There was zero room between the end of the lugs on the tire and the rear control arm so we had to clearance that. The inner sidewall of the tire was very close too but not close enought to warrant clearancing anything. The sliding door just rubs on the tire but there is about 7mm clearance to the wheel when the door is fully open.
At the front, we had about 4mm between the tire and the upper control arm. The Syncro mini mudflaps had to be severly trimmed so the tires didn't rub on them while turning.
Overall, the 30mm adapters couldn't have been more perfect for this application. The stock Syncro steel wheel ball lug nuts seat perfectly into the ML lug seats. _________________ "Sometimes you have to build a box to think outside of." - Bruce (not Springsteen)

| So Chris , where did you find the adapters ? Perhaps a 225/70 or 65 would clear the control arm ? Great the sliding door clears . I don't think my lug nuts are standard , I am running a mesh wheel like an 80's BMW right now . Thanks again , Julian . Also plus , I will be running a more street tire than a mudder . I am going to Google those Kumhos all the same . |

| Kevin at the adapter shop hooked me up . We ran a few test fittings and he made up four 1.5" adapters . About 3/8" space to the suspension and the door just clears . Well the door actually touches the tire but not enough to even mark . Thanks to all for the links and especially to Loogy for his profi advice . I had to go local because i was hoping to use the 255/65/16 that the rims came with . I will post an image when the van is shined up . |

| I like those wheels. Loogy, would those fit on my Tristar syncro from Sweden? As a Tristar, it has those plastic fender attachments, and it has Swedish front mud flaps that attach right onto the fender lip. If they fit, can you locate a set for me? |

I posted a few more clearance shots in the gallery . I must add that the adapter.com guys in Canoga Park did a stellar job on this . I was dreading the purchase of new rubber in a reduced profile but Kevin , the machinist , pretty much eyeballed it straight away at 1.5" . Then he got out the calipers and started a few test fittings . I am sure that Loogy would have done the same job for me but I couldn't drive that far in an afternoon . The front wheelwells were beaten back by a previous owner , a good thing because I wouldn't do it myself . Something rubs at stuff in the rear ... I believe it is the charcoal filter , I will relocate it . It may have been relocated already when the wbx was changed out to a 3.4 v6 . |

I like those wheels on Syncro's too. They seem to fit the T3 achitecture very well.
Will they fit on a Tri-Star with the fender flares? Yes, the wheels will fit just fine. You will have to be a little more careful with your tire selection though. You can see in the above photo that with 255/65's, the front fender opening had to be modified to clear the tire while turning. I would venture to say that if you chose a 225/65, you wouldn't have this problem. I would also stick with the 30mm adapter instead of the 38mm adapter that Patna chose. He chose that thickness simply to be able to run that large tire size. With a narrower tire, you don't need the additional clearance to the suspension. Using the thinner adapter gives you maximum clearance to the fenders.

I feel that adapters are better in this case for a couple of reasons. One is that you can use the stock length rear wheel studs. The other is that a 30mm thick spacer is huge. With a spacer set-up, by the time you end up buying the spacers, longer front lug bolts and longer rear wheels studs plus the cost of having them installed, the price difference to the adapters is not that much. Plus the adapter set-up is stronger.
Now the problem you are going to have on a 2wd is that the fitment at the front is quite different from that of a Syncro. A 16x8 is not the best fitment on a 2wd because of interference between the wheel/tire and the upper front suspension components.
You would need to run at least a 40mm adapter or spacer to have any clearance at the front suspension. This makes the effective offset 22mm. combine that with a 8" wide wheel and you have a front wheel that is protruding out of the front wheel well.
All of the above is assuming that your particular set of ML wheels are in fact 8" wide. That same style of wheel also came in 16x6.5" with a different offset. The 6.5" width is not nearly as common as the 8" wide wheel. If you do happen to have the 16x6.5" version, let me know as the spacer/adapter thicknesses are quite different.
PM me for more spacer and adapter information. _________________ "Sometimes you have to build a box to think outside of." - Bruce (not Springsteen)
