Does anyone have any 87 Westys for sale?
Does anyone know how much they usually go for?

Where are you? Those things are a dime a dozen up here in Canada. There are three 87's for sale on my local auto trader from 2000-5000 bucks Canadian. But you could prob pay more for a really nice low mile one

A good friend of mine recently sold his 87 Westfalia GL automatic to some lady in Utah for $7,500 which is about the going price for a nice fully optioned (complete camper, not a weekender) and reasonable mileage Westy. I have seen them for $3,500, but you get what you pay for and keep in mind the water cooled Westys are much more expensive to work on. I even called on one in St. Louis a couple of weeks ago that sold for around $1,500, but I was too late. Check out gowesty.com or busdepot.com for buying tips. Make certain to give any watercooled Vanagon the 5 minute coolant leak test because many of them have not been maintained with the proper coolant and the heads leak. Let the engine warm up and idle in one place for 5 minutes and then let it sit for several minutes after turning the engine off and look and sniff for coolant. If it leaks now it is only going to get worse without mechanical help. My friend and I traveled many miles in his 87 and it was a great road trip bus, but after spending about $1,500 over two years on various "minor" repairs he decided to go back to air cooled. Minor repairs included new trans cooler-$700, new steering rack -$500, electrical short that burned out the dimmer switch and lights-$200, and a couple of others that elude my for now. Watercooled is nice, but you certainly need to be capable of wrenching on it yourself. Good luck.
