Dates and new model year?

So here's my question, my bus was built on Aug. 9 of 1960. It has a lot of features similar to the 59' I had but this is titled as a 61'. When exactly did VW start the new model year? This one even came with the clear needle 80 mph speedo.

August 9th, 1960 would be a 1961 model but as an "early 61" it would basically be the same as a (late) 1960 model. Plastic front inner door handles, 1960 style seat, and so on.

My '61 Double Cab was built August 11th, 1960 so it's the same way.
