Fargo VW originally said... (8/4/2003 at 8:33PM PST)
I'm having trouble with my 74 SB. Running a stock 1600 DP, 34 pict 3 carb, etc. For the last two or so weeks, while driving at a nice pace (usually 3rd or 4th) the car sometimes seems to stumble or surge...hard to tell sometimes. It keep running an all, but when I come to slow down at all...the engine quits. It does however start right back up again. I'm not really sure what it is. Then it also just while driving down the highway gets that feeling like I just let off the gas all together, then jolts a bit, and is back to normal. All in the span of like two seconds.
Is it my fuel pump? I checked out if it was pumping ok, and it seems to be. Also replaced a line that looked a bit old. Any help would be great.
I'm also trying to get ahold of Jeff H. from Minnesota. If anyone talks to him, please mention that I'm lookin for him.
Thanks everyone.

Thanks kiefernet...I will check that stuff out. I am just reposting with the new samba forums. Nice job Everett...I like this high tech looking deal.

Very Happy

Do you put your foot on the clutch when you slow down??? Does it quit like stall or just fall and pick back up? Check to make sure everything is connected (and its connected correctly). Check the ignition system too, maybe give it a tune up. Hope this helps.

Yeah BIll , those posts pretty much say the same thing but each a little different. I am pretty sure that is your trouble... unless you have closed up/ burnt up points and or have not tuned or done any maintenance, like valve adjustments etc. lately... good luck, Post back if you need more info Smile

I'm not too sure all what Keifernet posted for you but here's my 2 cents, as I have had this problem. It turned out that My fuel tank was gunked up and clogging my fuel pump, and getting stuff into my idle jet, explaigning why when goign to an idle the car would die. Now since Keifernet was the one who showed me the idle jet problem, he's probabally already recommended it to you... but just in case. Good luck

Hey Bill;

I'm here. I've been gone, and have had a little trouble trying to get hooked up to the new style of forums lately. So... what's up?

I'm wondering if you've got either a plugged up fuel filter or a worn throttle shaft in your carb.

My 2 cents...

I will check into all those things as best I can still getting into working on my SB myself. When I slow down I do have to hold the clutch in if I am slowing down at a faster rate or the engine stalls are almost stalls. The oil light flickers and then the engine picks back up again when totally stopped. I did however find a hose to the fuel pump that seemed a bit old and replaced it and I haven't had a surge in a few days. I appreciate the help guys. Thank You.

Jeff, just wondering how near you are to Minneapolis and what not. I 'd love to see you VW sometime when I am down that way if possible.

Hey Bill;

I'm not too close to Mpls. About 4 hours. I'm just an hour east of SiouxFalls, SD - right on I-90.

I'm glad to see some other VW people around in the area.
Just for the record, I am 2.5 hours from Minneapolis/St. Paul. But I think I am on the opposite side of the state from you Jeff.

Believe it or not I had the same problem recently,except it finally got to the point of no acceleration.I pulled the top off the carb,pulled the needle valve plug out and bammm to my surprise it was full of old rubber from the fuel line.I was stranded , Laughing but back together and on the road!
