I was wondering how long it would be until news of Tom's passing would hit the site.....I received a call from a friend that lives in Moab a little over two weeks ago, he asked me to call the family since he was out of town.
Doing so, I spoke with Tom Jr, who plans to continue to run the shop/museum. He and his father worked together years ago hence the name TOM TOM's so he's familiar with the scene and this website/forum.
He is NOT selling off everything. He specifically did not post the passing of his father in this forum to, in his words and as mentioned above, keep the Vultures from harassing the family.
So please, send condolences as you see fit, just please give the family an opportunity to sort out how to continue Tom's passion on their own terms. _________________ Transporter Restorations

My condolences to his family. He was way ahead of his time, saving these cars when few others thought they were worth saving. More recently, he was certainly the oldest guy I have ever encountered on the internet. He'll be missed. RIP Tom. Glad to hear his family is going to carry on with his vision. |

The most recent page or two of this thread were unfortunately
lost with the recent "outage".
If you start from the very beginning of the thread (and read some of the links) it is a most interesting story.
On page two, 4th post down, there is a link to a fine news article about this interesting man. |

The world of VW enthusiasts lost one of it's most avid and genuine promoters. Tom will be missed for his wit and wisdom and the friendship he showed to many of us along the way. Rest In Peace, my friend!
Our condolences to his family.

That is really nice to hear that his son is continuing the tradition.
I unfortunately only knew Tom from here but he seemed like a great guy - I'll miss his posts and wit. |

I just saw this...and am very deeply saddened. I never got to meet Tom but had wanted to. We shared that Minnesota connection many times in chat. My condolences to the family. RIP Tom. _________________ VW-less right now...looking

Tom J. Arnold is continuing his father's business. Sounds like he will be de-infesting the yard of the domestic cars. He definitely knows the business as the other "Tom" in TomTom. Once moved back to Moab, he will re-focus on the family business.....more power to ya' Tom!
At the end of April, Moab hosts a wonderful car show (26-28th) and Tom plans on showing some of his Dad's cars in the run. TomTom participated often in the car runs and fit his VW's in amongst the muscle cars.
We plan on being there for the event. See ya' there Tom!

At the end of April me and my friends were heading out to Moab for a unicycle convention, and was hoping to stop by Tom's yard. I wasn't looking to buy anything I just love VW's and wanted to check it out. Should I even consider it now? |

Aaron, Why not stop out and visit? I've talked to Tom and e-mailed several times. He's a very personable guy. No, he's not looking to sell off everything, though he is going to do some organizing. Give him some time. If you do go down/up/out to Moab end of April, he will be showing some of his Dad's cars at the show. Tom (Sr.) had sent me a CD of the '05 show...right in the middle of all the muscle cars, there was Tom with his 61 ragtop....fittin' right in with the best of them! We'll miss him!

Wow what a story. Tom sounds like a true vw nut! I live in Cedar City, Ut and never new about Tom and his collection. I will definately be heading up in April. Please let us all know when the April show is. And give our condolences to the family. _________________ 1967 Fasty |

The car show is April 26-28. In '05 they had something like 750 cars of all makes and models. If you're headed up there, book a motel or campsite soon. Moab Valley RV Resort still had campsites available. All their cabins are booked. Motels then fill up fast and are expensive.
Tom was indeed a top-notch VW nut....knew a lot about them and helped many fellow VDub'ers as they passed through Moab.

wow! i havn't viewed this thread in a while. it's really sad to hear of old Tom's death. he was truely a die hard VW nut. i've had the privilage of personnaly meeting the man, the legend. i probably spent about 4 hours sifting through his "museum" and finding things i hadn't seen before. i did buy some stuff from him, it was a new item, but none the less, i left there with wonderful memories and a ton of pictures. i was even lucky enough to have been invited to his home to see his latest pride and joy '60 ragtop.
this pic taken about 2 years ago:
RIP Tom Arnold! you will be missed in this vastly growing community. i'm glad to have met you. take care up there!
Tom Jr., your dad was an awsome man, i will someday return to see how you've carried on your fathers legacy.

I just read about Tom passing in the T3 forum. Came over here to confirm.
I had the pleasure of meeting Tom, his wife and son in DC (of all places) last May. Great guy. He will be sorely missed here.
My condolences. _________________
