What color to paint VW roof rack ?
Silver or Gray ? What shade ? Shiny or dull ?

They look best in dull grey galvanized, just like original. |
Thanks, what about the brackets ? These look so original but brown in color. ?
Are they supposed to be used as is ?

Never seen them painted brown. Should be galvanized just like the rack. The lower inch or so should have a grey plastic coating like you have. _________________ nothing |

Here's a image from Samba gallery that suggests there are other brown versions. ?? Anybody else have an opinion before I paint these & possibly ruin their original-ness.

I think he was trying to say they match the Brown of that Bay Window
As far as I know roof rack clamps were never brown or color-matched |
Same here, but if those racks were somehow made to match a Champange bus that would be pretty neat. Definitely need some proof on that theory, though. _________________ nothing |

Here is how I am making the legs for my rack. I sleeved the new metric tubing to the old tubing on the rack. I will weld them together and I am thinking about brazing the rest together like original.

I remember the last time I suggested brazing a rack instead of welding. Geez, you woulda thought I was suggesting heresy. There is less heat stress to a brazed joint. And what there is is spread out on a larger area, unlike the HAZ on a welded joint which can cause a weak margin. Personally, the reason I like brazing is that you can control the flow of the material and there is WAAAAY less cleanup of the joint afterwards. I have brazed racks and ladders. I was never concerned about the racks. I had some about the ladders because I didn't want a rung to release under pressure while climbing on it. But, I never had a problem. _________________ "My biggest worry is that when I die, my wife will sell all my parts for what I told her I paid for them"-Jon

I agree, brazing those joints would be fine. And they will look nice, too. _________________ nothing |

I made the legs this weekend. I used a bigger hammer right after that first attempt at mashing the end of a leg. I made the middle legs after mounting the rack onto the roof because the middle was bent and sagging a little and needed to be adjusted to be level.

I got the rack done today. Well it needs paint blending and sanding and I want to do something with the repro clamps. What color or finish do the original clamps have? It looks great on the bus, I love it!

I got Chad - Ezycamper to send me out a kit. I used two less crossbars but otherwise stock and assembly was pretty easy.

can anyone get me some measurements from a full length vwoa bus roofrack? Need to know just general length & width, and how high it sits off the roof so the original clamps will work right. Thanks in advance |

Has anyone heard of an ORIS roof rack?? Would love to know what it fits before I disassemble the cross rails and and make it fit my bus.

The ORIS name pops up as an OEM supplier of M-B racks- so perhaps it has German roots? It sure looks the part. It certainly goes on a sedan or wagon body- with it's longitudinal arc. If I were dead set on putting it on a bus, I don't think I'd feel too guilty cutting those two center cross bars in the middle and inserting a rod and matched tubing to take up the space.
Nice rack! _________________
