i just posted this in the "site" section of the forums, but i'm posting it here as well to maybe generate some more feedback. (sorry for the multiple posts Ev)
http://thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=102282
seems like whenever i want to post pics of tools in use or just a cool new tool i bought or have just used, i never know which category to use in the gallery. since so many tools are used for multiple types of VW's, it's hard to add a post to a thread in only one category.
any chance, or even any interest, in some kind of "tools" section on the site, like maybe a gallery section or a forums section, similar to the accessories section? not for your craftsman set you just bought or for that set of taiwan screwdrivers you found in a junkyard, but for real specialty VW application tools.
i wouldn't mind seeing actual pics of real VW tools being USED in action, or even something like some kind of "here's a pic from a VW tool catalog, and here's the real tool". like some kind of documentation of factory or specialty tools people have or use. i think it could be informative to those who find tools for sale, but may not have access to catalogs to reference for application, or for something like "hey, i saw that this tool at joe schmoe's garage, and he was gonna throw it away, i better go get it before he does".
i do see pics of tools and them being questioned as to what they are and what they do (and how to use them), so maybe a special section could be warranted? _________________ thebucket: I invested in hoodride, now DBD won't return my call?

Make sure you make it clear it's for factory tools or the JHC will start posting pics in there. Right Dweezle? LOL
I like the idea as there is usually mention of certain specialty tools that are used in the Bentley manuals but seldom a pic of one. Is there a list of tools somewhere that will tell you what they are for? _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

i like the idea of a tooltalk forum, not just for exposure to factory tools, adn the specialty stuff, but for brainstorming on homebuilt solutions, low-buck stuff like bushing removers, bearing presses, paintbooths, jigs, etc. _________________ OG JHC

i'm sure there is.....somwehere. i have at least 20 different catalogs that list and describe VW factory special tools (not including Hazet or other tool catalogs). guess what, i still find tools i can't identify and have no clue. some tools only seem to be mentioned in passing in a service manual. some, i guess, got updated/changed/deleted so fast that to find them would be unusual. plus, like early VW parts numbering, there is an earlier numbering/lettering system for many tools, and to know updated numbers, or to see changes as tools were modified might help too.
i just think some kind of tools/application/use section might be helpful to someone who may not get it just by reading through a Bentley manual, or to show a homebrew alternative to an unobtainable VW factory tool. _________________ thebucket: I invested in hoodride, now DBD won't return my call?

Agreed. In a month or two I will be IRSing my bus and was planning on taking some pictures of the jig I'm going to make to line up the brackets. That would be a good place to post them, answer questions, etc.

Definitely a great suggestion. I still have a homemade tool my dad gave me for removing the fan shroud from a Type 1 engine. It's an end wrench with a 10mm socket brazed into onyo the boxed ends. When VW's first became popular in this country, my dad worked out of his garage repairing them. He would heat wrenches and bend them into certain shapes to get around the engine tin, generator, etc. When he moved onward to motorcycles he discarded those tools _________________ West Virginia State Board of Education v. In reviewing the conversation in regard to tools I don't see any mention of the tool manual issued by vw with all of the tool numbers and pictures or diagrams of all vw tools. I have acopy. |

tkarnold, what year is your VW tool catalog? i've got copies of a '55, '63 (with 65 updates), and some 80's catalogs that still have air cooled stuff in them, and a local manuafcture catalog (covering may years). i'm always looking for more, or additions to the ones i have.
this one just sold on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4528381201
a little bit much for me, but i had not ever seen this particular one before. anyone have this one? if so, what's the vw part number? _________________ thebucket: I invested in hoodride, now DBD won't return my call?

well hi Tom, been a while. last time i was at your shop i fixed a muffler on a yellow beetle, owned by some guys from sweden or europe somewhere. that was about 6 or 7 years ago.
and thanks for the offer Bill, i'll let you know.
i am hoping to make some kind of "list" that has tool numbers, what the tool does, and possible updates. _________________ thebucket: I invested in hoodride, now DBD won't return my call?

Long dead thread in need of resurrecting. I made a major score on some tools for air-cooled and even water-cooled through the 1980s. I've been adding the images to the Samba Gallery with links to the manuals in the Technical section. These are Matra and Peiseler.

Made this tool to adjust valves. Remove distributor cap and place this on the distributor. Align #1 nail with notch on distributor, adjust valve, then rotate engine until the next nail is aligned with rotor notch adjust that valve and so on...

Why not just use the TDC mark on the crank pulley and put a mark at BDC 180* off?
You don't need a fancy degree pulley. _________________ Glenn

I used this after the warranty was up on my bus and I had to do the valve adjustments myself. This made it easier, for me, and in case I was interrupted I always knew which valves I was adjusting. _________________ "You can lead an aircooled to water, but you can't make it drink"
