I am getting ready to leave for germany and when I return I am going to be buying a thing. I have been doing a lot of research or atleast trying to but I still have a lot of questions. What are some things to look for when purchasing a THING. I am most likely going to be getting a 181 1974 thing. Also what are common problems that arise with the Thing? Where there any design flaws or anything like that???? What is a fair price for one that is in good condition and what is considered good condition for them. Also since I have never driven one or seen one in person are there any weird qwirks with them??? Thanks

Good question. I'm sort of in the same situation.
I need answers to all those questions also. Don't know a thing about Things.

hi guys!well i guess the main "thing" to look for is RUST.in england body panels are hard to come by,maybe not so bad for you guys.most of the running gear is bug so not so hard to source.reduction boxes can be a pain(mine is irs).theres still quite a few about in germany, your best bet is to visit a show in europe.i bought mine from the spa show in belgium, strangely from someone who lived close to me in england!!happy hunting Smile

VW Things are design flaws. Here in the states the 73-74 don't have reduction boxes. They have a thing specific trannsaxle simlar to a bus with two CV joints on each axle. Rust is the main thing to look for. I would also look for completeness. Get all the extras you can. If you look into a bit you will find a few parts are hard to find and expensive.
oil bath air cooler (a must for a stock thing $80-100)
Top frame and canvas $1000+
Side curtains (windows) $1000+ for the good ones.
bumpers $100+ each
Even the rims (thing specific) go for $30.00 each used.
This is just a small start of the list.

Check these sites out. Parts
