Just picked up an NOS Herrod Helper from my FLAPS for cheap. For those that don't know, it's a simple rear spoiler designed to improve MPG & crosswind stability.
How much does it supposedly improve the mileage? Apparently one of the rags tested it & it is documented to work. What did they cost in the day & how much are they worth today?
I had to have it-the price was right & it's a piece of VW after market cottage industry history. The mounting hardware was even wrapped in a piece of a '70's Triscuts box, turned inside out & stamped "Herrod Helper" w/a "tm" & a patent #. Gotta love that! |

not raging on your find because i have always thought that those are kinda cool. but back in the day if you had one of those you got laughed at. infact i remember a long post in rants and raves here that listed stupid or low quality parts. that was one of them that was rather high on the list. again not saying it is dumb at all and if i had a period cal look car i think i would run one as well. _________________ aircooled for life (1972 squareback cal look) |

"back in the day" is a all to familiar phrase but I'm talking about when youfirst got your bug lowered it, put on some cool turbo mirrors, added the wink 5-panel with louvered cover tinted windows and had the 1835cc and the 45 dells singing thru the r-x stinger thats back in the day, and the herrod helper fit then I think it fits now. Not like covering the whole ass of the car just to get some down force, my car is fine to about 115 then the front gets pretty light _________________ Drive a 70 beetle w/79'2literw/hydraulic lifters 3:88R@P 65 fenders 59' hood

In a VWT from '02 they did a feature on the Berg's famous black '67 race car & it had a red Herrod Helper on it, though there was no mention of it in the text or captions...later pics of the car don't show the spoiler. I have not found any earlier pics of it yet.
That settles it for me, though; if it's good enough for the Bergs, it's good enough for me! |

They were remade in the UK by Paintbox, featured on Bernie Newbury's black race car. |
