The wing he is referring to I believe is made by Ron Lummus Racing and is for sale through Aircooled.net. It has a lot more surface area than the original Herrods Helper.

I was wondering if anyone is using one, I thought about one for my 66 as I have an area of highway I have to travel that has a bad cross wind which these are supposed to help.
I have one on the way in the mail as we speak.

tight "skinny" jeans Confused

The Herrods Helper spoiler is too tiny and situated too low on the car to have a significant aerodynamic effect (the eighties were all about looks, so it's all good Cool ). The Kamei front spoiler on the other hand does enhance aerodynamics (I had one on my '76 Superbeetle vert).

I stand corrected. Embarassed

Fortunately I won't be putting any of those on my Bug! Rolling Eyes

I didn't install my original Helper for looks. Let's face it, it ain't pretty. It did have the affect of reducing road noise on the freeway though.

I want your honest opinion on fit and finish first.

Then does it really make a difference in handling at highway speed? Like I said we have some wicked cross winds where I have to sail my bug on the highway!

I'm not too worried about cooling issues because I run with the deck lid propped out at the bottom.

Last but not least, I don't care about what others like.....I like the look of the wing!

I bought and installed my Herrod Helper for function, not looks. It gets a lot of attention, both serious and humorous. That was supposed to help with crosswinds as well but I didn't notice any improvement. The only asset it seems to bring is the decrease in road noise. If MPG changed, it wasn't noticeable.

The Ron Lummus wing is hopefully the best of both worlds. It looks better and if it performs the same as the Helper, then I'm satisfied. I have two concerns about this wing though: first, the wider surface area could affect cooling, although they claim just the opposite; second, the vertical fins are located in a perfect place to decrease visibility and add a blind spot backing up in a parking lot.

I'll keep you posted though.

Update:

I received my RLR Street Wing very quickly. The shipping may have even been overnight, which was impressive. It came very well packaged also. My first act was to pull out the actual spoiler and lay it on top of my Herrod Helper and that got me very excited!

The first downside here is that the power supply in my computer fried so I can't post the pictures I've taken with my iPhone.

My rundown on the product... I'm not entirely sure I would've bought it had the opportunity to do it again. Why? First of all, it isn't the same as advertised in the sole picture that exists of it online. The uprights are mirror image to why I expected, which is no big deal as far as I'm concerned. My issue is that when I took pictures trying to duplicate the advertisement shot, it is clear that the spoiler sits a little higher and further back than we are led to believe. Basically, it doesn't hug the body curve as well as it should to be aesthetically pleasing.

When I committed to my purchase, I noted that Aircooled was out of stock. RLR does not sell to the public, and no other vendor I could find carried that product of his. I decided to contact Ron directly anyway. He responded promptly and told me he had several available and all Aircooled had to do was place an order.

I emailed Aircooled and passed along that info. The response I got back was that last they heard, Ron had lost the plans and had to recreate them from scratch. However, with this new detail, they wet ahead and let me place my order.

Admittedly, I was very confused as to how this thing mounted initially, so I wax again in touch with Ron. He was very helpful in guiding me because it isn't as simple as the Herrod and comes with no instructions; the mounting plate must be installed very specifically.

I ultimately did a temporary mock up install, using machine screws instead of riveting it together. Upon noticing the variations I brought them to Ron's attention and he said it was strange. I took and emailed some requested pictures from him. He told me he saw the difference, asked me what my opinion was, then told me the spoiler had not been redesigned. What I found odd was that he admitted it was different but offered no explanation as to why/how it was so.

Overall, a mixed bag and a mixed result. I'll keep it and paint it when I paint my bug soon. In the meantime, it needs prep because there are a lot of rough edges and scratches that need sanding.

The only noticeable change to performance so far is a further reduction in road noise. The Herrod had the same affect but it seems RLR one-uped it. I haven't driven in a crosswind yet. I seemed to have missed those by about a day, as we had some serious winds right up to the day of my install.

One note: maybe it's because I assembled this with far less hardware than is intended, but the spoiler tends to slightly wobble vertically on the freeway, and shimmy side to side throughout at the slightest provocation. Riveting in its entirety may or may not improve this.

Will do.

I forgot to add also that this prevents the deck lid from opening all the way. The license plate light housing hits it on the way up.

I have the pictures on my iPhone, just no way to post them with my computer dead. About the best I can do is find the time to head over to the library. From there I should be able to email the pictures to myself and post them from my flash drive I'll take with me.

About the only thing I can add is that there is no improvement in cross wind conditions over the HH.

You can post them from the Iphone. You just have to log onto The Samba from your phone and add the photos as if you would regularly do on a computer. I used to do it this way last year before I got a camera to use.

I'll give it another try. Last time I did I couldn't do so.

Edit: It comes down to either updating my OS (which I can't do without the required WiFi connection) or download a new browser. I'll look into the browser since Safari pisses me off sometimes anyway.

IMO, the Herrod Helper looks better.

I also understand your fittment complaints now.

I actually wish I had snapped a shot of just the spoiler sitting on top of the HH, without the side wings. That got me excited. Form fitting and an attractive height made it look much more refined than the end result.

I cannot tell from the pictures, but it looks like the legs could be modified to suck the wing inward and down slightly to get that look.

I have a Ron Lumas Wing race wing for the back of my Baja Oval and it fits the body line snug, which IMO looks better than the gap.

I've had similar thoughts. What stops me is concern that I may hurt whatever actual function it has now. Ron swears it wasn't modified but there's are two obvious differences between what I have and Aircooled's picture. And Aircooled told me when I tried to order it that it wasn't available until Ron could recreate it from scratch because apparently the plans were lost. I just don't know.

I am wondering how everything might improve once I paint it with the car and lower the front end to level the wing out.

Any chance of seeing your set-up?

Not at the moment. I attached it, then took it back off to finish the Baja. Once it is done, painted, it will go back on. I put it on with Dzus Fasteners so it could be removed as needed.

These are a few Gallery pictures of what it is. I am using this instead of the typical fiberglass rear Baja engine cover scoop. It looks funny at first look, but remember, the baja has the engine exposed and a custom rear cage, high jumper fenders and 32 inch tires with a total of 14 inches clearance.

I was wrong, it is not a RLR wing, it is a Big Wig wing.

Here is the Baja it is going on.
