|
|
Im trying to get some info on what others have done, its the oil cooler that replaces the stock one. Its for a 69 fastback, looking for some ideas, is there advantages of smaller compared to the larger oilcoolers? _________________ Zombie

You mean in the cold air intake that's used to cool the engine? |

I'm guessing this is a type 1 engine. You better make sure the compartment is sealed just like in a beetle. With the decklid standoffs, how do you expect to get enough flow through the fender air duct to make the cooler perform optimally?
Pictures wouldn't be a bad idea so we can make sure you aren't going to blow up your motor. |

I still don't understand how decklid standoffs by themselves could help a type 3 cool. |

So, the decklid has been removed and the trunk is where the standoffs are. I hate to say it, but that's a real hackjob to get the carbs in. Shoulda gone FI. |

Wrong. This isn't a Type I motor.
The T3 pulls its cooling air from the vents in the fenders. That air travels from the fenders to the space behind and above the rear bumper (an air plenum). The air then gets sucked by the pulley fan into the squirrel cage fan which blows the air out of the fan housing. The air then can go over and around the engine to cool it as well as thru the heat exchangers. Thus, it is this air from the fenders that is used to cool the engine -- all deck lid stand-offs would do is provide cooler air to the carbs. They have NOTHING to do with cooling the motor or keeping "the air flowing".
What you've done is allowed the engine cooling air to become pre-heated, in essence reducing the cooling effect of the air going over the engine.
This also leads me to wonder why a remote oil cooler was even necessary in the first place and I wonder if you even have the stock one still in use as well as any methods of properly regulating the oil temp so as to not over cool it. _________________ Toby http://www.aircoolednut.com/

It looks bad and I don't recommend it but I do understand why. _________________ Toby http://www.aircoolednut.com/

Gotta disagree with there, Don, the factory FI worked wonderfully if you were running a reasonably stock motor.... and if maintained, it still works today... _________________ póg mo thóin

My '71 Fastback has all the original FI parts in place except for the fuel pump. That died one afternoon, 30 miles from home, and a friend of mine that is a mechanic showed up to help me with one from a Ford Ranger pickup. It is still on there 3 years later. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey
