Ummmm....I'll just say nothing because nobody would read my whole 2 page response as to why they suck.

You'd be cool trading your '66 for a '74 in the same condition?

I have nothing against any beetle Early or Later style. I like them all. Early model arent the easiest things to come by around here. I would love to have an early model bug but one has to stay in his price range also. The U.S. military does not get paid all that well.

They didn't make a '74 Type 34 or any sort of '74 Type 3. GOTCHA! Laughing
But seriously- I wouldn't trade an older one for a new one, but I wouldn't pass up a newer so- called "fatty" just because it was a "fatty". They're comfortable, reliable, and make great daily drivers. I actually like the later models a lot for those reasons., and have owned quite a few over the years.

I don't bash late models, they have just as much as right to exist as the early models. However I'd prefer an earlier model for my own car. Late models are:

- not as classic in their look.
- lower quality from the VW factory, they just don't seem to hold up as well over time.
- too many US safety changes made lots of things get ugly, complicated, etc.
- 71-74 Supers have that godawful front steering setup

But having said that, I think that once VW finally put rack+pinion steering on the Supers in 75 they made it much better. The FI system on 75 and laters is good if maintained well. but I think the only late model VW's I'd want to own would be a standard FI model from 75-77 in good original condition.

If you got yours for free, you should be rejoicing they are not highly sought after Exclamation

"Don't look a Gift Horse in the Mouth"

I didn't even look at the pans before I said, "I'll take it"

Ugly ass cars-- plastic everywhere.

As for no 1974 type 3's, here's a recall notice for 74 squareback transmissions.
