71 was the first year for front disk brakes.
i am really suprised that there are so many 71's out there. i had thought this was a year that was somewhat rare ( i use rare losely). i think i came up with this simply based on the limited availablity of parts, orginal and aftermmarket.

I read somewhere that 71 was the best year, since that it has the older style engine, yet still had some new technology like the brakes, and I'm sure some other upgrades. I guess its the best of both worlds. |

That is very surprising, I thought the later bays would far outnumber the earlies! Crazy stuff. I wonder why that is? And 69s, lots of em, drum brakes and s/p engines! Like the old Carter Family song, "keep on the firing line"...

I remember reading on Ratwell's page that VW imported more busses in '69 than any other model year.
Go '69!

i would imagine that those with later buses are not in this forum or are even aware of this site, simply because they own their vw's as vehicles not as aircooled enthusiasts.
i've noticed that most people driving later buses don't wave, smile or acknowledge another bus next to them. i would guess this will change as these vehicles get even older and less desirable by the masses.

please. Late bay owners are just like everyone else in the baywindow forum. You generally don't own an air cooled VW these days unless you are an aircooled enthusiast. It's not like I'm driving mine because it's all I can afford.
As for why so many early bays as opposed to later ones, I suspect because VW had peak bus sales during the early years. VW in general saw some hard times in the American market as the 70's progressed. The type 3 was phased out, as was the Ghia, Thing, and by 1977, the beetle sedan. They simply were not selling well anymore. Same goes for busses. If you look at model years, cars almost always experience highest sales when the new model is released, and they dwindle from there on out. _________________ Your car may do 0-60 in under 5 seconds, but can it sleep 4 and cook a meal?

I think (I hope) he was talking about Vanagons and Eurovans. They have their place in bus history, but for me, once they went wasserboxer, I lost interest.
My h20 vanagon is a van, not a bus. They stopped making busses in the US in 1979 as far as I'm concerned. _________________ -=Rob
