let's put this old topic back up again, I am very curious about this movie since I wasn't able to find it anywhere in Holland...
Is there anyone who has this movie on dvd or computer? and can help me out?
Thanks! |

I saw this film today and first let me say this. My girlfriend saw it on net flicks and told me about it. When I read this part I rolled my eyes and said no way.

he boarded a 1971 VW bus with his dog, Jack, to follow the tour schedule of the Grateful Dead. |
She rented it anyway and I'm glad she did. It was very inspirational and was not about a bunch of stoned dead heads. I gave it to my daughter watch it. She read the blurb and rolled her eyes at me. I really hope she watches it. Rent it for the bus and walk away learning something about yourself. _________________ Prosit!

I could do a boring movie. . . complaining about the cold in San Francisco and wandering under the stars in Arizona. Here's me now:
Scene 1,933
Hazy sunshine beating down on an endless stretch of interstate leading into the shimmering mountains in the distance, a demented looking flower wafting under the rear view mirror, speedometer shows 43 mph, SUVs blasting by on the left, a book is propped between the dash and the rim of the wheel, looks like. . yes it is, Taking Jesus Back From The Fundamentalists.
Scene 3,466
A flashlight beam illuminates the headliner and windows, our camera is pointing up from the floor, the scene turns purple as the comforter is drawn up, a sharp rapping occurs just overhead, muffled voices can be heard. . . " can't park here. . . is there someone in there? what is it with these people? damn, that thing is in good shape. . . my brother blew up three engines and sold his. . . . your brother was an idiot. . . back later and. . . . "
Scene 5,981
Engine shuts off on a grey November day view through the windshield is the interior of a barn. A groan is heard as the camera jerks slightly " my baaaack" "Welcome back, these are the bills." Camera wobbles to the brown grass then lurches to the sky as a thud is heard. . .

i stumbled across this movie during an online public library search, placed a hold on it, and got to watch it tonight with my fam. my older children understood and enjoyed it - they've grown up in buses and traveled tens of thousands of miles in them - so there was a lot there for all to relate to. great seeing kesey instead of bill gates afterall.. four farookin engines..? i think he had the last one rebuilt in springfield, oregon by monroe at mackenzie auto. wonder how far he got with that one, lol. if ever someone needed an airs list and feeler gauges its eric! especially recommended movie for people just getting into the first years bus piloting. _________________ When you cross an Irishman, they never forget. I just ordered it yesterday from netflix. Should be in the mailbox today! You guys should also check out www.vwvagabonds.com This couple travel the world in their 78 west. 3 years in the pop top travel to 4 different continents going over 60,000 miles! I just finished their book Wide-Eyed Wanders and I've spoken with the guy Richard that took the trip! They have Slide Show presentations scheduled throughout San Diego if any of you live around here. Check them out when you get a chance. The book is truly amazing and inspiring!!

Good movie, thanks for the recommendation. That bus was WAY overloaded, and I'm sure it wasn't maintained properly....no wonder he kept blowin engines. |
Maybe he was getting his engines from GEX! _________________ 1968 Deluxe "Clipper L" Type 2

I heartily second that notion, jtaux! Excellent book for lovers of the open road. Especially people who appreciate the journey as much as arriving at the destination. No interstates for the chap in Blue Highways... it's all about taking his time, meeting people, tasting the true social undercurrent in each community he passes through.
In fact, I'm going to break mine out and re-read it this week.

Another good motivator to do that (at least vicariously) is the book Blue Highways, by William Least Heat Moon. He was in some american van rather than a VW, but the spirit of the road runs deep in the book. _________________ John

Anyone ever know what happened to that John Muir dedication video? Someone that knew him was creating a move about him and his affection for VWs. I lost track of that web site and wonder if this ever happened?

Very cool movie and something I considered doing (on a smaller scale) on my own...just traveling in a bus with no clear destination would be great.
At one shot, his bus looked like a sunroof model? I'm definitely down with that! (gimme type IV though)
Colin is the only one I've met who is doing something similar to this...traveling and seeing the world. Makes for a great story. |
