supercool, Alex !
it's interesting to note that this doveblue panel has chromed DLX hubcaps installed. a modification that can be seen on many BD stds and panels of the day.
Awesome lettering and corporate design.

chrome hubcaps were standard on all buses through 1957

If you look at old photos of Barndoor Buses, they all have chrome hubcaps

If ever there was a logo bus worthy of re-creation...

that is one great pic, wow !
I had just been wondering about the chromed hubcaps, as the painted hubcaps would have been available during the BD years (from split and oval standards).

I'm almost positive I saw a later bus (1958/59 or so) at a swap meet in Salina, Kansas several years ago with Mercury Outboard signage on it. Didn't have a camera or phone, so no pics......

Kiekhaefer had dealerships all over the U.S. so it isn't impossible that a couple of these still exist!

This is interesting and I never thought of that. I wonder why they didn't use the cheaper painted ones earlier on Commercial vehicles.
Maybe someone at VW got a big idea in 1958 to save money. Smile

Yes.

Both of my barndoor parts lists show only chrome caps. my July 1956 parts list shows only chrome caps. My April 1958 parts list shows both chrome and painted caps.

All of the factory press photos show chrome caps on buses, as do much of the sales literature. The exception seems to be some heavily logo'd buses. It is possible that primer delivered buses got primer hubcaps. It is also possible that standard model hubcaps were sourced from dealerships, or chrome caps were painted.

Most period photos show chrome caps on commercials.

VW also noted the change in Progressive Refinements:
6 august 1957 chassis number 273650

If you want to split hairs, the first week of the 1958 model year had chrome caps, but that is only about 2000 buses, of which maybe half were commercials. Also, PR has been shown not to be exact in a few places, so I would put that in the margin of error. All in all, there is very strong evidence that most if not all BD commercials came with chromed hubcaps. (the possible exception being primer delivered buses)

Very interesting! that sounds very plausible, since there are indeed photos of BDs with painted hubcaps in old pics, and those might be factory primer buses.

I just flipped through my Zweckvolle Innenausstattungen brochure, and interesting enough, even though all of these are special equipped, if not coachbuilt or logoed, ALL of them have chromed hubcaps. My factory PR photos of a very early 52 SC truck also shows chromed caps. somewhat weird.
If there was something like a primered huocap for a BD/ up to 57 era bus, there should be an M code for that, right ? does anybody recall anything like that ?

then again we would have the trouble of center badge color on pre 57 chromed hubcaps. how many different colors would there be for Bds?

we should possibly open a seperate topic for that issue.

I would assume the M-code for bus in primer would include the caps, and not get a separate M-code just for the caps. Chrome hubcaps have their own M-code M-181, which is common on Westfalias, and occasionally seen on commercials. Most postal yellow buses are M-coded for chrome caps.

For BDs, the hubcap center colors would match the lower body color, so not all that many options.

Good one! The one I saw in Salina was a driver and had been lowered. I think it was a panel also.

On another note, I just realized that the Ford in the background is one of the haulers for Kiekhaefer's Chrysler 300 Nascar stock car teams.

1954 in Munich, the german football national team just won the world cup title. People in the streets are celebrating.
The players are in the Magirus bus in the back and luckily a Barndoor Bus also was part of the convoy! Very Happy
