I see the occasional period Barndoor photo photo surfacing showing Barndoors in use within the armed forces.

They are usually posted within the ‘Barndoor Junkie - Vintage photos’ thread, where they can end up buried.
I seem to remember several posted there, & they will take some digging out. If you can help with that, please do.

These Barndoors mostly seem to be based in Europe, at a time when The Allies were patching things up after Hitler’s Germany & WW2.
They were typically painted drab army green, with the bumpers and nose badge colour-coded.

It would be nice to group these Barndoor here.
A couple of Swedish buses that are still around spring to mind.

This one is a British Royal Air Force Barndoor.
The TAF on the nose (top line) and door stands for Tactical Air Force.
The base name (town) would be the second line on the nose.
It has an RAF registration number, and displays the RAF roundel logo.
It was probably in use as an RAF pool car in Germany in the mid/late 50s.

Please post up any armed forces related Barndoors.
If you can add cool background info djfordmanjack-style, that’d be grand.

I’ll dedicate this thread to the memory of John Brookbanks, SAC 4174554 (Senior Aircraft Technician), 1937-2022.

Here is a little update on the photo. It was taken at Spangdahlem AB, Germany. It is a single cab. The photo was taken in 1955-1956. The US Air Force Air Policeman is armed with an M1 and three rounds, with all the gear, gas mask, canteen, ect. Turns out the AP's back then only worked during the daylight hours, with German forces securing the perimeter at night. I'm checking to see if there are anymore photos. Cool

That picture answered a question I had when I posted this picture a while back. The USAF bought early VWs for use in Germany. I thought maybe this was a GI in front of a German Air Force vehicle but it was likely USAF property.

Very happy and healthy RAF (Royal Air Force) Police Dog at Jever Air Station in Germany in 1957 *note rare background motor pool action, with a RAF Barndoor (Dog Van) and various Beetles*

Those Police dogs traveled in style - *woof!* Very Happy

Special thanks to my friend Dave J in England for sharing this photo from his archive.

....wish this picture was in COLOUR !! I recognize the PLATE, so I know what the colour is... weird thing is, all the trim and the beauty-rims on the wheels are nicely polished, doorhandle is chrome, while the LOGO is NOT chromed!! I guess this one was delivered in PRIMER before it went to the Belgian ARMY !! ...so YES, this must have been an ARMY GREEN Deluxe !!

HERE another one from the Belgian army... both pictures came from an Exposition in Ghent, in april 2011... It was NOT the same bus, as the second one's plate started with a 3.

This is interesting, a Behr scoop with only two popouts. Most of the time they seem to have six popouts except on ambulances.

Government vehicles often seem to have weird mixes of options, like sunroof standard beetles, etc.
