I had a gentleman buy a car off me and bring it back to Canada. (I am 10 min from the Border.) He had no trouble, had to pay sales tax, but I wrote it out for cheap. He had to get a notary public signiture as well. Al long as the tag says its CA/USA or whatever you should have no problems.

A good idea would be to call Border Patrol.
Good Luck!

I remember he had to pay at the boarder for something. I wouldn't think you pay tax twice. It would be a good idea to call the county patrol where you are. Smile

I imported a car from Seattle into Canada.

You need to pick the border crossing you choose to use in advance.

You need to contact them. They will fax to you a package of instructions.

3 working days before your intended crossing, you need to have the seller fax to the US Customs people a copy of the Title and Bill of Sale. This will allow them to verify that the car is not stolen and has no leins against it.

On the day that you cross the border, you need to check in with the US Customs people and show them the original copies of the documents (Title/Bill of Sale) that were faxed to them. They will stamp them and let you go.

Then you report to the Canadian Customs people. Anything to declare? Yes, this car. They'll send you on to the customs office. You'll park the car and go inside, wherein you'll pay the gst on the sales price of the car, provided the car is older than 15 years. If it's newer than 15 years, there is other duty too.

The entire process, both borders took us about 30 minutes.

Items to watch for: The Customs offices have funny bankers hours, so you need to plan accordingly when you schedule your trip.

Insurance: We contacted our insurance company ahead of time and they knew what we were up to and extended the coverage. We're from Alberta, and had to get an "Alberta In Transit" form from the MOV to put in the windshield. This, along with the coverage from the insurance company made the whole trip legal.

This was August of 2004. We picked up a 1966 Karmann Ghia in Seattle and drove it through BC and on to Edmonton.

PM me if you want more details.

Good luck.

M

Do you need a title to register a car in Canada?

As near as I could tell, the Title was only necessary to satisfy the American Customs agents. We need a Bill of Sale to register a car in Canada. There isn't really an equivilant to the Title here.

Hello, I picked up there is 2 weeks ago my low light ghia to the custom warehause in Montreal, and I baught the car in Houston Texas.

What paper I prepared and what they asked me are:
- The original title with the name and address of the seller,
- The bill of sale, where is mentionned: the VIN of the vehicle, the address of the seller, my address in Quebec, and the Price to calculate the federal fees (6.1% for german car + 7.5% for importation)
- The confirmation that the car is insured to my name.

Before autorize you to pick up the car, they control the VIN of the vehicule with the title and the bill of sale.
Then you must be sure that all the numbers are OK.

At the border it needed about one hour to check all of these points and I could go at home with my Ghia towed without any problem.

Now, I must pay for the provincial fees to drive it with my new licence plates from Quebec.

Jerome

From the US, or worldwide?

For newer cars, do they have to meet CMVSS crash and emissions standards or what?
