Hi Joe,
At the dealership when purchasing the VW, it would be a Sapphire IV. Later whenever the owner got around to buying one.......

Hi Eric and Barb, I found a web site from the forum that lists all radios and specifies year and car model. According to the site the IV model is for a Ghia but is 6 volt. The site says i needa VI, model 7fbvg. Who knows!

Sapphire VI. 12V AM/FM for 67.

The IV is a 6V model from 1966.

The V is AM only.

I'm pretty sure that a Sapphire V is an AM/FM 12 volt radio... monaural too I think. When I get home I'll double check the ones I have.

Sapphire V is 12v AM. Sapphire VI is 12v AM/FM. Both were 1967 only models.

From notes I copied from somewhere on the internet for the Sapphire VI:
"This is probably the most sought-after of all the the Sapphire models. It’s a one-year-only, 12 volt, AM/FM mono radio making it desirable for many VW years. As far as I can tell it was made only by Bendix but there were two models, one with a pair of output transistors above the shafts like the IV (7FMBV) and a later version with a combined pair above the on/off shaft. (7FMBVX) To get technical, the change was from NPN to PNP transistors and because the combined transistor pair is NLA I’ve been able to repair a 7FMBVX with separate NPN transistors. This model also used the black and chrome faceplate and the rubber knobs."

I have one in my 1969. I suspect it was not dealer installed, but added later in the car's life.
