Has any one ever bothered ro consider why modern manufacturers have eschewed this type of sound deadening ? No. It is obsolete, done and dusted, totally old fashioned and a waste of time. Has anyone ever seen a judge at a show pull up the carpets of any car to check the validity of the sound deadening ??? No. It is silly to assume that anyone other than the absolute purist would require original tarboards. Where can I get some? _________________ "Chris of the Ozarks"

I bought the tarboards from WCM and they were the correct shape. They only covered the area in front of and behind the seats though. So I had to make something for the tunnel and other places. |

Well, it is an old car. What do you suggest to use? I think it is very lame to put carpet directly on the metal pan. I guess I am old fashioned. But, how modern that road noise will be. |

To me you need something rigid like the original tarboard to keep the carpet from showing the pattern built into the floor pans from showing through. The thin glue on insulation to me would just duplicate the the groves and depressions in the floor into the carpet. Maybe if you used a really good foam over the new stuff it would hide the groves..of course foam/water and steel do not go good together..

But you forget the smell-- that special smell old VW's have. The tar boards are certainly an important part of that special oily-wet-sock experience we all love. |

Several months ago I saw an ad on The Samba by Vintage Volkswagen Werks pertaining to reproduction tarboards. I sent for a sample and was fairly impressed with their product. Comparing their product to my original tarboard pieces - the repro. tends to be a bit thinner than the original and does not contain the random hair, sand and other material used back in the days when our cars were being produced. I'm not quite "there" yet for ordering tarboards for my restoration but will consider them when I get to that point. Check them out at:
www.vintagevwwerks.com/Tarboards.html
P.S. If anyone has ordered and installed these, please let us know how the experience went (customer service, delivery time, fit and finish, etc.). |

I'm with you cruiser. From their web page it looks like the best thing out there and the price seems fair. It will be interesting to see what those who have bought it have to say.. |

I went to the "Werks" site and decided to order the 10 pc. set. It looks good on screen and besides, if it does'nt fit the bill I can always list it on e-bay and sell it for $100
I'll give you all my impressions when it arrives in 7 -10 days. _________________ "Depression is a malfunction of the instrument we use to determine reality.”

I got mine from so cal a few weeks ago, I just forgot to post up how they are. It seems they are considerably thinner than the OEM tarboards. I think Im going to go ahead and modernize a bit with some good ol' dynamat. (edit- on top of the new tar boards i got.) |
