I have a problem. I am addicted to auto wrecking yards. They're like disneyland to me and the price of admission makes it a cheap habit to maintain.

I sometimes come across nice bus parts and want to save them but I can't spend all my money hoarding parts. I haven't done much selling online and assume you bus guys are as cheap as I am.

Some neat parts I sometimes come across:
Factory 79-85 electronic ignition systems. I figure I could make a small profit charging $100 dollars for the system including distributor and coil.
Interested?

50/50 slider windows with screens. I like them and use them myself. Anyone want them? What would you be willing to pay?

Any other parts I should keep my eye out for that you guys would be willing to pay for?

I'm sure I can find bumpers however they tend to be bumpeb. I'll see what straight ones are going for. Shipping something that size should be interesting as well.

I've had my eyes open for set of sliders for my bus... I think Bus Depot is asking $160 apiece for the windows (brand new, genuine VW), $40 each for the seals, and $50 for two screens - all of which is WAY to pricey for me, especially since many people have told me that they can be found at swap meets in the $25-$50 range fairly easily. The only problem is that there are NO VW's in the scrapyards here and only 1 or 2 swap meets a year... I'd probably pay $100-$150 for a set of two sliders with screens if I was sure they were in good condition. I think the main problem would be dealing with shipping them...

OK this is encouraging and I've got as many PM's as replies to the post. I'll see if I can get on this tommorrow. They had a few bays last time I was there. That's why I brought this up now.

As a FYI, 78/79 sliders never came with screens or even had potential for screens. Here on the west coast, I have seen a couple of pairs of aftermarket screens that bolted [screwed] to the outside thru the rubber seal and the body. The last pair I saw was over 7 years ago!

If anyone remembers Charlie Ford and his Westy, the Mothership, going on a round-the-USA trip called 'In Search of the Beginning of Wind'(?), he has one of the pairs on his Westy. Not sure who got the 2nd pair.

If you see sliders with screens built into them, they are not from VW.
They were made on the west coast for ASI Riviera campers out of the northwest. Nice sliders, hard to find, and a lot thicker than VW sliders.

Do you see a lot of 79-83 bus electric ignitions on the east coast??
They were Calif version only. That is all I see here in Calif......

The only VW salvage yard we have here that I know of, the owner started another business out west, put it up for sale, and moved away. It just sits there practically abandoned. Occasionally he comes around but I never know when.
It's frustrating seeing all that stuff from Buses to Things sitting inside a fence with no one around to buy from.
I need the left rear chrome strip for a '69 deluxe transporter. Not the curved one that wraps around the corner -but the one about 4 feet long directly in front of it, that goes on the beltline of the body under the left rear window. (Not part of the window frame) -it goes on the bulge of the body. And also 4-5 of the clips that go under it to hold it to the body.
If you find that stuff, would you PM me with a price?

You need the one on the left slider cover, if it was RHD. Measure the length of the cover, that will be the length of the trim. I may have one.
I have almost a complete set and bunch of the clips and screws.

That's the one.
47-3/4" long, about 1-1/16" wide. I'd love to get that piece.
It doesn't have to be pristine -just better than the silver furnace tape I have covering the screw holes now.
PM me if you have that? I think left and right are the same on that one. Thanks.

I'd love a set of sliders to get rid of the jealousies....i even have an extra set of jealousies just don't like them Smile things like finding a set of keyed alike door handles and rear hatch are hard to find but would be nice. Odd ball things too...extra trimming (plastic beading) for westy cabinets that is nice, cab. handles, illusive quartz clocks, etc. i haven't had luck finding any of this in local yards....though, all stuff i want and would pay for.

Josh,
just a word of warning. i' was doing a fair share of parts sales and abruptly stopped due to the following:

emails for purchases that never came through

people trying to low ball what i already felt was a fair rpice

people bitching about paying shipping

people bitching

constant trips into town for the bank, post office, ups, fed ex etc......

innumerable emails to keep up with or reply to on a daily basis.

not saying it's a completely bad gig, made new friends, made some great trades. i still have a garage full of bay and westy parts but list very few for sale here in the classifieds. i'm gonna try the sho scene this year. hope you have great luck and find heater riser tubes for me Wink

I know what you mean...... I have lots of parts but I just wait for someone to say "I need such-n-such part" and then I say "I have one".

It is the people that say "Help, I desperately need XYZ part RIGHT now!" and you never hear from them again!! WTF?

What heat riser tubes do you need?

2 different flavors of tubes:

72-74 and 79 with round bottom holes.

75-78 with oval bottom holes.

I have them both.

2 different flavors of flapper valves:

72-77 with the mushroom top vent.

78-79 with the vent pipe.

I have them both.

You can see the difference here:
http://www.ratwell.com/technical/Microfiche/t202410.gif

Pipe 1 is round, pipe 2 is oval [OK, too hard to see]

Valve 12 has the mushroom vent.
Valve 11A has the exhaust pipe. The hot air vents out the rear of the bus thru 40, instead of dumping in front of the engine.

I have the 40 pipes also, you will need new 39 hose. The pipes bolt to each rear hanger bar support using existing holes.

Josh, Karl knows of what he speaks. I have your same junk yard addiction. I have the type of job that I can pop by a yard most every week and see what I can yank off a bus. People are funny. They also tell me they need a sunroof seal or a sliding door hinge or some such, we agree on a price, then they disappear even if I get right back to them the same day with the part. So you need to be prepared for that. I think the hot things right now are the bumper guards and sliding door steps. I can get those off quick with a nut splitter and those sell first thing at the swap meet.

I'd like a complete injection harness for a '76-'78 Bus, please.

you can mark up the price and make yourself a few bucks as we all could use parts, I'm certain.

Gooc luck!
