I don't own a volksrod but I think they look great and would some day possibly build one. I'm just wondering if anyone knows how to get around the fender law or what the law is? |

Law varies by state/province/country. Check your local laws. In US, for the most part, even if it's illegal to be fenderless the cops won't hassle you as long as the car looks classic (ie: not on a Ford Escort) and is safe looking and you're not doing anything stupid. |

Dick
Up here in Wa. it has to be 1964 or earlier.
It's a fair weather law, if it starts raining you have to be driving home or you will get ticketed.
Most cops are cool, but I carry a copy of the state code in my glovebox just for drill.
Shalom,

Nick look at Aussies avatar, I think that he is one of those, " Oh, don't cut it up" people. Hey Aussie, MANY vehicles are unsafe from the dealer, the only difference betweem Nick and the designer of the Corvair, or Citron 'bungiemobile', is who their daddy's are..............Ones doin it in his backyard after hours and the other has a auto manufacturer behind them...
Nick, your a freakin artist, I hope I can shake your hand someday.
Aussie, I have a few words for you: cut-weld-drive!!!
Any questions?

Thats ok Brian, I am a bit of a purist if you like but, my main concern and I think Shane Red's as well would be the crash safety and integrity of this vehicle Nick is building. Could anyone honestly feel safe in a construction like this?
I know motor vehicle standards vary from country to country and even state to state but, I know it would never be road legal here in Australia... It would have to be inspected by an automotive engineer and be certified safe... I mean look at the door how it has been sectioned and welded like that That being said I could never see it being road legal in the U.S. either...
For along time in Australia we were about 20yrs behind the U.S. with the crash safety standards of our locally built cars up until the mid 1990's. Nowadays some of them exceed the U.S. standards
I thoroughly appreciate what Nick is trying to create and the incredible effort as well but, I personally cannot see it being completed. I see this vehicle as being an experiment of his talents and he will use the skills and experience from it to build something far better.
If I am proven wrong I will eat humble pie. _________________ If it's not in a Volkswagen I'm not going!

Aussie
I've been building vehicles since I was a 14yr old.I cut my teeth on a neighbors 33 Ford 3 window, flat black with plywood floors. sweet Hot Rod.
I just love the little guy makin it happen. His door will work, look good and be as safe as any door could be, I know there are better, but none like his.
You are correct Nick will finish it, and his next, [I think he has two churning in his head] will be better.

As I stated, it is a project and NOT FINISHED!! Besides, how does a thin piece of sheet metal make a life or death difference. Did you see the thick piece of metal bar behind the skin to act as an impact bar? Probably not because NOT UNFINISHED YET!! Anyone can walk into a job site and of a new building and say "I don't want to live in that building, it doesn't look safe with all those exposed rebar". Here's the more completed version, but it is still NOT FINISHED.
Yes my car won't be as safe as a modern Mercedes, but it's more safe then the more common dune buggy.

Thank you for the positive reinforcement What makes you think I cannot finish, have you seen any of my progress, do you know my overall plans? My car isn't the most radical car ever built, there has been thousands of great customs before this one, they all finished. What makes you sounds like a total dick just on my project. Is it because I took a Beetle that are readily available and can still be bought cheap and not restored it to make it look like every other Beetle on the road... |
