was curious if anyone knew if a 73 super beetle transaxle had that 3.88 gear? , or if the tranny codes would indicate gearing, and if so where could i find out once i had the code, and finally would it bolt straight into a 70 IRS ghia pan ? thanks for your input. chris |

I have a 3:88 in my 70 ghia...the nose cone mount is different and will require the older nosecone to be put on. The 3:88 usually has a single side cover case. The 4:12 usually has two diff side covers. |

Look here on the transmission opposite the fill plug.

AT coded tranny should have the 3:88 r&p _________________ Gary

Like Gary said, you are looking for trans code AT stamped into the case on the lower right side forward of the diff. You will also need to swap the nose cone to be able to mount up to your chassis. When you do this, you have to make sure the new nose cone does not interfere with the cage for the mainshaft ball bearing. Sometimes you have to grind a relief in the nose cone to clear the cage. |

so is the 3.88 only found in a SSC trans? Is the AT designation only on SSC cases? |

No, there are a few very rare DSC AT gearboxes. Those have all the same internals as a SSC, but with 2 sidecovers. |

Well, you already know it is IRS. An AH trans has a 4.12 R&P.
Is there a tube around the input shaft? _________________
