Like the message states, wondering if VW offered a option of a radio for the Thing and if yes, what brand, model, etc... was offered in 1973. I seem to remember a VW Thing ad one time showing a radio option but not 100% sure.

Radios were dealer supplied (installed at dealership as an option)

I seem to remember Blapunkt maybe?

Saw this on E-Bay a while back. The seller described it thus: "an original VW Sapphire XVIII AM radio that was taken out of a 73 Thing. It has the correct faceplate for the Thing or a type 3 that mounts under the dash. This was an option that was installed by the dealer." It went for $59.09.

FWIW,

This maaayyy be irrelevant, but I'm a big fan of the way the PO installed the radio/CD player in mine. It hides completely! Cool

Thanks! P.O. is shorthand for "previous owner" by the way.

I'm not even sure what brand it is, but it's a pretty generic 50-ish watt CD player. The previous owner wired up a crossover network and made a speaker box for the back. Sounds pretty good considering all the noise a Thing makes. I'll take some more pictures of the install for you.

And with that, I've derailed yet another Samba thread... Very Happy

Scott, when I first saw pics of your dash in your "So my Thing's a freak" thread, I wondered why all the switches were on the left panel. The wisdom of it is all coming into focus now. That's a cool and very stealthy setup, and impossible for those of us with the BN-4 gas heater, I believe, as the ductwork passes through the firewall into the area where your stereo is mounted.

I'll take some more pictures, but a lot of it is starting to make sense to me as well. The new port for the gas heater is a larger hole into the footwell, and all the wiring is, as you said, on the left side.

This is the radio I just won on eBay and will be installing in my Thing. I had been looking for a Sapphire but found this Sharp picnic radio from the 1970's that was a good fit both by year and also would fit under my dash. I like the picnic radios that can be used both in and outside of the vehicle so this will be cool to take on Thing road trips.

It has a neat dock the radio locks into and connects to the antenna, power, and even speakers if I wanted. Should look nice in my Thing.

I dont know it if it came standard or as an option but i know it was made available. The radio on me thing is a freagin rust bucket the thing is almost completly deteriorated. Everytime i pick it up im scared i might get tetanous through diffusion. im gonna mount speakers onf the rollcage, and in the car body's holes. im gonna put an 8 speaker system plus a bazooka tube subwoofer 8 inch. Very Happy god i love it, also planning on putting a phat noise system (mp3 playback dock for cars) and a 6cd changer.

I received my Sharp Picnic Radio on Friday and installed it today. Looks nice in my Thing. There is a key at the left that allows me to lock the radio in which is cool. It even has a jack for an external speaker so one day I will mount a couple speakers someplace for better sound and all. And when I am on a Picnic, just take out the radio and take it with me. I like it...

Reviving an old thread - my '73 has a similar looking Sapphire, but it also has FM. I want to remove it, but I can't see how it attaches without opening that dash compartment there, but because the radio is mounted underneath, I can't open the dash more than maybe 1/2"...
so any tips on removing those radios intact?
thanks,

There's 4 screws under the dash panel (2 per side of each panel) that hold the hinge pin assembly in place. Can you get to those and unscrew the assembly and maybe slide the dash panel out?
