To date 20, Started this list in the late 60's most were owned during the 70's and early 80's.
The very first and the Best was my 1960 Beetle, Sunroof and the basis of many wonderful memories. Sold it to a family friend and she moved to DC where she drove it for years, sold it finally and last she heard it had died on the Beltway around DC and the new buyer WAS NOT happy!! Wish I knew its fate, 60 bug, India Red, sunroof. Anyone in the DC area?? I know there is one in Jersey owned by Bob Cropsey, but that's not it, though it is a dead ringer for my car.
Currently own the last three on the list but only the Super is on the road. The Ghia's await repair, Most likely the two combined to make a 69 1/2 Ghia Vert and then the remnants parted out or scrapped.
1960 beetle *** The first and my favorite still !!
1963 beetle
1966 beetle
1964 beetle
1967 beetle
1968 beetle auto stick
1966 Ghia
1968 Westfalia
197? VW Rabbit
1969 Square back
1968 Square back
1971 VW van
1973 Westfalia
1967 Ghia Vert
1955 Beetle
1957 Beetle
1968 VW Van w/Corvair engine conversion.
1974 Super Beetle Convertible *** Current, runs, licensed, insured
1970 Ghia Convertible *** awaiting ultimate fate
1969 Ghia auto stick *** awaiting ultimate fate

My first was a '74 Love Bug, ravenna green.
I've owned 22 of them since then. I still have 15 of those... including the love bug.
Currently driving a fairly ghetto '73 Super, a '94 Jetta and a '99 New Beetle (with 605,000 km on it) |

My 1st VW was a 1974 Scirocco, blue of course. It had a cracked manifold so I learned to drive playing footsy between the gas, clutch and brake so it wouldn't stall and a leaky gas tank so anything over $3 or 4 gallons it would just liberate on it's own.
The I graduated to a 1978 Type 2 Combi van, red. I died a horrible death into a tree on a snowy day in New England.
Now I have a '74 Type 1, yellow.. And I enjoying it when I'm not trying to get it to run. |

My first VW was a Sahara Beige '74 Super Beetle.
33 years and 165 beetles later my current stable includes
1953 Split Window
1956 Oval Sunroof
1960 Sedan
1963 Sunroof
2004 Mexican Beetle
2005 New Beetle 1.8T

First was my 68 bug which is still my daily, its about to be put away for a future restoration, If I dont sell it, I plan to convert it back to bone stock when i'm old.
Next is my 71 super that was rotting away in a friends yard, it hadn't been driven since 1988 and has 79,000 original miles. after replacing everything on it with bigger and badder, its almost ready for thrashing.
also had a slammed 64 ragtop bug and a 63 nova ss _________________ 71 Super - Backroad Thrasher

My first was a '71 super new off the lot....sold in '80 for $800
(Actually, that was a very good price at the time..almost 1/2 the sticker from when new 9 years previously and had about 130,000 miles).
Went 20+ years "VW-less". Bought a '74 super in 2004, restored and sold about 3 years later. Then got my current, a '74 vert which I'm now restoring and having a blast with it. Daily driver is a '08 Honda Ridgeline pickup. _________________ - John

I owned a new '66 1300 in Germany while in the US Army. I also owned a 1951 VW Beetle on my second US Army tour of duty in Germany.
I bought a new 1988 VW Golf GTI that currently has 211,000 miles on it. The engine has never been touched and it still runs great.
As of today, I am the proud owner of a one owner '72 Super Beetle.

My first was a 72 standard white with flames on the front (the one that got away) - I'm still kicking myself for selling that car. This was in the mid 90
s
second was a red 66 standard. It had alot of issues that I didn't feel like dealing with. I sold it in 03
Now I have a 69 standard. It's a mix between dark blue, primer black, and primer gray. It's got a 1600 in it and it's the best running out of the three that I've owned. This one is THE keeper. It's got it's share of projects needed but I'm determined to hang onto this one and turn it into a nice/cool car. I'm not gonna be kicking myself ten years from now for letting this one go _________________ 69 standard |

The first was and still is a 66 totally disassembled and really, really rusty. It was taken apart twenty years ago and i got sidetracked by a 75 std that i get to drive when it is not broken. Like i just wasted a summer and still have an engine rebuild to do.
Why do a lot of posts mention irrelevant water-cooled cars? |

My first was a '56 beetle rusty as hell that must've been 15 years old at the time. Later I had a '60, then a '64 and then I had a 70'ish ghia - don't remember exactly what year.
The '60 bug was my favorite. The engine blew about a week after I got it and I had a brand new 40 horse put in by a VW dealer. Drove the heck out of it for most of a decade until I got slammed from behind and totaled.
I've been working since July on '70 standard and may finally have it rolling very soon - this weekend if I get lucky. Yee ha! |
