I'm T3'ing because of the wife...she wanted a Squareback for the longest time until she discovered Notchbacks. We lucked out and found her a '64 N.
Now it's the uphill learning curve for me as I've only ever owned bugs and buses. But having driven it a few times around town (proper tune and wrench day scheduled for this weekend), I see why T3 people are so passionate about their cars! It drives like a dream! _________________ 9th Owner of a 1971 Tintop Westy

Im T3'ing because i wanted a bug, but love wagons
Solid running car and even though parts availability locally is terrible, i love going to aircooled shows here in the midwest and only being one of 2-3 type 3's _________________ My other Squareback is a 322hp Fiesta ST |

My reasoning is: I had long ago at the ripe age of 14 seen an old notchback sitting in a field (someones front yard), with tall grass all around it, and i was struck with the typical question (what kind of car is that). later found out it was a notch and i've kinda always wanted one since then.

My story exactly, except I was older than 14, and it was behind someones garage. _________________ Everything known to man has been written.

I am Type 3 Only becouse.. (before I have to admit I did not like in the begining)
When i started in the VWs World, i bought my first car a Bug 61` a week later, driving in the street i saw a Rare Car.. looks like a kind of VW (i thinked) then i can put come to that strange car, and ask to the driver, wich kind of car is that.. then he tell me "Its a VW NOTCHBACK!".. WHAT? (I respond), (he shout again) "VW NOOTCHBACK!".. then i went in my way, time later, i saw again the Notchback, and like so much!.. then i can talk with the owner and said if he want sell to me... but dont wanted.. The time passes-- and sometimes i saw the car and the owner, i always i asked if want sell to me the car.. i gave my phone and adress if he change of mind..
Ok, after some Super Beetles and others Water Cooled VW`s one day somebody are ringing my door.. and he was the man, the Notchback Owner, saying me he want sell the car.. and ok.. we negociate the price.. the last May month was the 10 years with me!.. Reasons about Type 3?
-Are a rare Car but nice cars
-Are comfortable Vintage VW Compact car to drive and passengers
-For the time was a high end VWs Car
-By some strange reason (in my head i guess!) i see a resemblance to the Porsches (i like the Porsches!)
-I owned many VWs, and this car its the best car ever a had, talking in quality issues.
Anyway ..I think this sort of car is not for everyone and not everyone likes

I've had a few beetles over the years but have always liked the look of early type 3's. Recently we decided to do a VW for my wife again and sell one of our late model cars. Faced with the prospect of doing a full rebuild on one of the early bugs in the back yard, we started thinking about buying a driver and the discussion turned to "well while we're at it, how about something a bit more practical to ferry the kids around" so the search was on for a squareback.
We found a 69 squareback interstate, about 2500km's away, and got on a plane to go have a look, it was literally in the middle of nowhere but that made the trip all the more interesting. A month or so later it was in our driveway. I always wanted a 69, in Australia that was the tranisition year with early body and IRS, discs and balljoint. We still got lowback seats in 69 here and no FI, dual solex's.
Its funny how non VW people love the look of the car, and some comment that at least its not like a stupid beetle with the motor in the back. When told its still in the back you tend to get that confused look as they ask "but how? its a normal wagon boot" followed by "well what's up front under the bonnet?" Some people just don't get it!! Loving driving it around, will be even better when the interior and motor are sorted. _________________ 1958 Bug drag car project

Have always onl ever wanted early 1500 T3's because as a lad I saw a restored 1500 'S' in Hot VW's- About March 1987 if I remember correctly?
I got awfuly lucky and managed to buy one of the only imported 'S' notchbacks in Australia when I turned 15 and it was in my favourite colour of velvet green- that was over 20 years ago, and there is still no way that car is ever going to leave my garage.
Of course I have had a few other VW's as well- about 40 - 50 now plus Alfa Romeo Alfa Sud, Porsche 911, Chrysler's, Holden Commodore, Toyota Corolla, Suzuki Swift, Golf MK 2, Golf MK 5, Audi 80, Jetta MK 1, and a few other odds and sods like Vespa's. _________________ Aaron

Wow, I just looked thru this thread, and realised I hadn't posted to it before. Anyway, I bought my first t-3 back in September 1983 (a 66 Square) from the local VW dealer for 400 bucks. I had it for about a year, fixing it most of the time, as it was in rough condition (mechanically). I did a 12 volt conversion, as I couldn't keep the battery charged. However, I quickly learned that I needed more experience working on cars, and sold it for 600. Then about 4 years later I found myself looking for Fastback. I really wanted a 69, but all I could find was a nice 70 (with little rust). I bought it a year later (on July 4th 1989), and it's been in the family since (21 years now). The first drive in that car was 1286 miles home (in an unknown condition car), as I flew in to pick it up. It preformed great (it had a dual carb conversion done to it before I bought it).
Around 1996, my wife wanted a VW of her own, but it had to have AT (that ment it was going to be another t-3 for our family), so the search was on. In 1998, we found a 70 Square, that was light blue, and had AT. The engine had died due to having AC, and the floors were gone behind the seats (from the pop outs being removed It had been parked next to a repair shop for almost 20 years). I found some floor parts from the guy down the street (he was parting a 72 Square), and I rebuilt the engine. She decided she'd rather have a Fastback, so I swapped pans, and told her I wanted a Notch. Don't get me wrong, I loved that Square, and drove the hell out of it for 2 years.
So again, the search was on. I found one (in 2000) on e-bay, in Dallas TX, and was high bidder, but my price didn't meet the reserve, so I contacted him after the auction ended and asked what the reserve was (another 100 bucks more than my highest bid). I gave him his price, and had my dad pick it up (since he lives 2 hours north of Dallas). I got the car about a month or so later, and dug in. The pictures looked better than the car was, so a full rebuild was in order. Six months later I had it on the road, and was enjoying the ride. I gave the Square to my dad for a combination birthday/Christmas present, since he was looking for a good solid Square. I had also sold my 76 bug that I had picked up in 94 (it was a daily beater), and decided I'll never own another bug (too damn small inside for me, and rode like crap compared to the t-3s).
So for the last 21 years straight we've owned a t-3, and have added 4 more to our family. My son got converted to t-3s in 2002 when we started building the "Pile". Only my daughter has a bug (a 73 super), but we're working on it. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I loved my Comodore 64- I still play half the games on my Nintendo DS...
As for the Holden Commodore- I got smarter and sold it after running that sucker up to 350,000km as a work hack. It replaced a 1956 oval window with 1916cc and dual 48 IDA's. I broke the engine mounts a couple of times and decided it was starting to eat into my social time. Dark days my friends.
The Commodore was replaced by a 1993 VW van so the good forces returned to me. _________________ Aaron

After owning a used '64 Bug, and after hearing great reviews from a friend who had bought a fastback, my dad bought his first new car, a '71 clementine fastback. I rode home in the back seat form the dealer at the age of 12. It was his baby for years. My brothers and I all bought Bugs, Ghias, Buses, Squares; they came and went bu the fasty stayed in the family, becoming my daily driver for years, and then being mothballed at the side of the house. My dad, now 90, did not know I even still had it. I brought it back to life three years ago, rebuilding it mechanically, and doing just cleaning and waxing (so far) cosmetically. I presented it for my dad's inspection on Father's Day three years ago, to his delight.
How can it be anything but my favorite car, certainly my favorite VW? |
