Man that's a pretty damaging link. If looking for a type 4
performance engine, what about FAT Performance ?

Would you rather buy an engine from someone that just pulls parts from a box and stuffs them together in their garage or buy from someone the dyno tests everything they do, balances everthing to perfection, takes no short cuts and measures everything to insure all tolerances are spot on in a shop that is clean and well equiped to deal with all aspects of engine building.
I have not seen the FAT Performance shop and can't speak to their facility or work. But I think they have a good reputation.
I have seen the faciliy at Raby's Aircooled Tech. and have seen the processes they use to biuld engines. Their work is second to none and the research done there is unparalleled. Jake has pushed the type 4 to a new level with Nickies, composite lifters, DLC coatings, cryogenic treatments, etc.
I think this is the difference. One (Steve) throws parts together in his garage and depends on the vendor specs and tests nothing. the other (Jake) raises his engines from a seed, does not depend on vendor specs, measures and balances everything. Then brutally test eveything on the dyno. You can also buy engine kits from them and assemble them yourself.
I would skip the copy cat and go with a shop with a good reputation. _________________ NO_H2O

I would seriously consider your options when ordering from stromberg, aka type4parts. Even one negative comment should point you in the other direction. I spoke with Stomberg and was disapointed with his mis-information and over-pricing for parts (FI stuff).
If your looking for T4 parts I would recommend Jake Raby www.aircooledtechnology.com he knows his stuff. It may be a little pricey, but all the research he has done has paid for itself in the quality of his parts and service. He does everything reated to the T4 from engines, trans and a really good DTM cooling setup. (no shameless plug, just experience)
Also, Mike Sharp is a great guy. I spoke with him recently regarding his upright cooling conversion. He has been in the industry for a while and is respected in the community for his quality and attention to detail.www.sharpbuilt.com.au
Best of luck in your endeavor..... _________________ Gotta Luv the Dub! |

The reason I posted Fat Performance's link was due to
the story on a buildup Hot VW's and Dune Buggies
featured in their "How to build high performance engines"
or something close to that. It came out about 10yrs
ago. I still have the mag in fact. Fat did a build up on
a type 4 as one of the stories and they showed all the
process's they go thru to get one of their T-4's right.
I've read some of the stuff from Jake Raby's site and he
does post here, which I thought was pretty darn straight
up. Nice to see a vendor post his own personal exp
with the rest of us who maybe don't know that much.
He's always been polite and helpful. At least it seems that
way to me..I don't know about this Stromberg fella, so
I'll not say anything in that regards. Besides it seems
that Calipornya has kinda taken care of that...
Best of luck with whatever direction you go with. _________________ Hmm, ruff.

i'm the poster from the 914club thread. every bit of info is the truth. take a chance and buy from type4parts. DO NOT plan on a refund!! he assured me he would refund my money, if i returned the engine. after inspection i discovered the engine was not what was advertised. he then told me he needed to inspect the engine to ensure it was suitable for return. even after you arrange to, and ship the pos engine you have purchased back to steve stromberg (dba as type4parts). as i was told, "i'm not going to give you one nickle". a nice guy helped me with the transport back to southern california. stromberg absolutely refused accept it. it cost me another $85 to have transported back to my town.

Thanks for the heads-up, but sure sorry to read about your
bad experience. This will do little if anything for you, but
it might just save someone a lot of hard earned money
reading about your bad times with type4parts..Bob _________________ Hmm, ruff. |

if i can spare one person this sort of nightmare, my mission is complete. ss is the pariah of the 914 community. if his business is in shambles, that is some consolation. read my "critique" of his business pratices in the vendors feedback section.

FAT has been around for some time. ...And so is HeadsUp performance. Both are excellent shops.
Stromberg should not adverstise machining if he is not doing them himself. I cannot believe he used JB Weld to seal an exhaust air injection port.
Those equipments pictured in the his ads are NOT cheap...Sunnen! I only wish I had some of those.
It is just so sad what happened to that Kevin fellow. I hope everything works out for him.
That is why I like to hobby shop...no troubles.
Enjoy. |

Nick,
you are assuming he actually owns the products shown in those picture, right? Do you see a fault in this line of logic?
I can't believe people still ask these questions, the information is out there, and has been there for years on this guy. All you have to do is ask and/or look.
