So, apparently I did not isolate my wires well enough this afternoon, because as I was reinstalling the front head-liner on my 90 syncro westy this eve, I heard the tell tale sound of a short circuit at the overhead light...and (what I thought was) the pop of a fuse.
No biggie I convince myself...just the fuse...I'll get it on the way out, and proceed with the headliner.
Well, later, when I pulled the #3 fuse - it's fine - wtf?
Everything in the van works EXCEPT the overhead light, the stereo, and oddly enough...the fluorecent camper light? Other than the first two, I didn't think these cicuits were even connected?
Anyone been down this road before? |

Are the bulbs OK? Is there power to the lights? Maybe a ground is loose or came disconnected |

Yep all the bulbs are good.
I have checked all wires for continuity and everything checks out.
Whats weird is that if I apply 12 volts directly to the courtesy light, I can run everything on that circuit that is out, normally, including the radio, make-up/visor light, clock, camper light (turns out that is fed from the courtesy light).
I have scoured the bently diagrams and can't seem to find another culprit.
This is bummin' me out! |

Maybe someone installed an aux battery and moved those items from fuse #3 to a separate fuse to the aux battery.

PG 97.210 in the Bently I believe is the right diagram.
I've traced wires all the way to the terminal at the fuse panel.
Bently says B 12..mine is actually B 26 for the power source (for some reason).
I'm having a difficult time understanding why I'm not getting power from the pin connector if all my fuses are good. |

Yes Mark, the van does have an aux. battery, and all those items do run off it, isolated from the starting battery. But it seems like all this stuff is piped into the main fuse panel. Do you suppose there is a pre fuse pannel - fuse somewhere? And if so...why would it leave the other functions on this circuit operating (like the cig. lighter, map light) All other switched & non switched power systems seem to be functioning as they should...but they are also on a different circuit.
I'm an idiot when it comes to electronics so bare with me
Thanks for any help. |

Fuse #3 is for cigarette lighter, radio, clock, interior lights, central locking system (at least it is on an '87). _________________ -- 1987 Westfalia automatic (Captain Vino) |

Mark...your a genious!
You got my head going in the right direction. It was indeed a 15 amp fuse located under the drivers seat/battery box.
It was stuffed way up front...had to dig a little
Never even knew about that one..good thinking! |
