Troubleshooting my 65 Microbus poor gas mileage over the weekend. 5MPG is just not cutting it even if she is a garage queen and gets out only a dozen times a year.

What carb did they originally come with? 28 PICT, 28 PICT-1 or
30 PICT-1. All my reference books seem to have a different answer. A quick search of the archives did not make things any more clear. Also, what type of return spring system for the throttle arm? The push return spring or the pull style like the 30 PICT has?

Right now, I am betting that it is 28 PICT-1 with pull style throttle return spring. (If it matters, I am also running a governor as well)

Why do I ask??? I have all three and if I am going to have a carb rebushed then I want to put the right one in there.

Thank for the help.

Looking at:
1. My '65 Bus owner's manuals
2. My low-mileage mid-'64 Bus engine.

I believe it's a 28 PICT-1 with the push style spring (spring on throttle cable).

What reference books are you looking at?

5 mpg? That is insane. Maybe you have a gas leak?

is the odometer way off?

as far as I know, a stock '65 1500 engine should have a 28pict1 carb. I believe that the 30pict1 showed up in '67. I can double check some of my literature and look on my bone stock original '66 bus engine. years back, I had a very original '65 bus which had a 28pict1 on it. the difference between the two carbs should only be 1-2 mpg.

Everett, Lind. Thank for the info.

28 PICT-1 is what I had on there with the push spring. I was looking thru the Bentley manual, some online carb info I found, and a few of those year-by-year change books and it seamed that they did not jive.

5MPG. Odometer is close (I am running 165R14 I think with a stock drive train), no gas leak. Exhaust smells rich and the muffler tip is black so I bet my leak is out the muffler via the carb. I was hoping to find a HUGE main or idle jet but did not. I did find a worn throttle shaft and I had the mixture screw out about 2.5 turns but otherwise nothing obvious. I am going to get the carb rebushed and drop down the main or idle jet one size. Maybe up the draft tube as well but one thing at a time. (Discussion more for the Engine forum though)

Also engine forum stuff but any chance the governor would affect this? I have the spring as tight as possible so that it does not cut in very soon.

Matthew

Here is a good reference site from Type2.com:

It sounds like the choke is falling closed, the float needle is open all the time, or the float is too high or cracked and filled with fuel. Did these thing all check out? Even too high fuel pressure can breach the needle and just over-fuel the intake.
