|
|
I just had the engine in my '67 completely rebuilt by a very trusted and reputable shop. When I got it back I had a new part - one the car had never had before - a cheap plastic in-line fuel filter hovering just over the distributer cap and ignition wires. Now, I'm no rocket surgeon, but this seems like a dumb thing to do. One little drip and poof..."bug-b-cue"! While I recognize the benefits of having a fuel filter, my car had 150,400 miles on it (all but about 1,000 put on by the only other previous owner) at the time of its first rebuild and it never had an in-line fuel filter. Given this, I can't help but question if one is REALLY necessary? If so, I want to find a better location than perched over my distributor. Any suggestions about location and/or necessity? |

Thanks for the link! I did a search before posting but I must have missed that one. I insisted on having the fuel pump rebuilt instead of the Brazilian replacement crap. My pump has the screen filter in it and I did not know that the tank had a filter, too until reading the comments on the link. I have a length of new braided line that can replace the one that was cut to put in that plastic thing, so that's what I'll do. Good suggesstion on relocating the filter and using a metal one in the link. I'll check into it. The special fire extinguisher is a really good idea, too!
It's kind of distressing to see all these great cars in the galleries and classifieds with that stupid plastic filter over the ignition wires. (they are called "ignition" wires for a reason!!)
Thanks! |

I second firing your idiot mechanic(he can't call himself a technician if he pulled that stunt) also you can find another used fuel pump and rebuild it yourself,they're really easy! _________________ die schwarzen Schafe #666 |

I got a rebuild kit from Wolfsburg West and it works beautifully! Just take the screws out of the pump and bada bing! I happened to find a used original style pump on ebay and purchased it just in case I needed it, but so far mine is performing great with the new seals and diaphragm from WW. I would recommend spending the $13.00 for the seal kit to anyone wanting to keep their bug "original"! |

I did the same thing with my '67. I bought a nice used fuel pump, and rebuilt it with the WW kit.
However, mine still seemed to leak a bit of fuel. I solved the problem by wrapping some plumbers teflon tape on the brass screws of the fuel filter cover. That did the trick, and now I have an original pump doing its thing just fine! _________________ '67s Rule & '71 Buses Too! |

Anyone have a pic of a metal filter mounted in this location (front - under tank)? _________________ All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood

The location of the fuel filter is just one of those hot button topics on Samba that bring out the opposing viewpoints of:

It just kills me when I see a $15000 VW with a plastic 99 cent fuel filter in the engine compartment with no hose clamps either! _________________ "When it rains...

Here is where your fuel filter is on a 67;

Here is another place where the factory saw fit to install one;

Still another factory place;

All I could find in the gallery was this one with a Summit filter installed.

This is obviously not what you asked for, but this is where I put mine:
(The fuel lines have since been re-routed)
I feel comfortable having it here, since it is a steel filter and it's rubber mounted. _________________ Copyright CJ Industries, Inc.

Wow double fuel filters. Double clean. Not a bad idea! What size is that fuel hose? |

Helfen - With my aging eyes, I only see one filter. Are you looking at the coil?
Anyone have a photo of a filter under the gas tank? I'm curious as to the spacing. Thanks! _________________ All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood

He is probably talking about the filter in the fuel pump.
Also, if you add the screen filter inside of the gas tank, then the total is 3 filters. |
