|
|
I searched the forum to see if I could find mention of where the stupid thing is located. It's not in Bentley and as I was adding a third eye in the back when I went to test them, no brake lights. All the other lights work and the fuse is good so could it be the switch, If so, where is it? (*&%$^ German engineering!!)
Thanks for the help! |

There are two swiches on the master cylinder. One's for the brake lights the other is for the light on the dash if the brakes fail. Did they work before you hooked the third light up? _________________ My Art:

I always thought they did, maybe I was hoping that they did. All I did was to splice the wire into the brake wire (the red/black one #4). I'll crawl back under there and see if I can locate it.
Thanks. |

Unhook the the third light and see if they work.
You may need a little thing called a lodic circuit to get it to work , no big deal only about $6.00 easy to wire in. It's supposed to be for when you have brake lights and turn signals combined so it may not be it.
itf the lights work with it's unhooked then it could be.

Still can't find where the switch is located, do you have to take apart the dash to get to it? I unhooked it and still no ligths so I am thinking the switch is bad or not there.
Thanks for the help. If I do get them working and the third light doesn't work I'll try your link. |

OK, I found it in an easy to get to location way up under the steering column. Now I need someone with real small wrenches to remove it. It's a two wire so I know I can get one. So if that's not it, what would be causing no brake lights? when all of the others work. |

It was the fuse. It just looked ok but when I replace it with a new one everything worked just fine including the 3rd light.
Thanks, somethimes you just have to keep on keeping on until something gives. |

I just replaced the switchs for the brake lights on my '89 after I found that they didn't turn on untill the pedal was all the way down. I found that the same switch is used in a bunch of air cooled applications. I got a pair of switches (2 wire) with shipping from Mid America Motorworks for less than half the price of one from VW.I love the (rare) cheap parts on a vanagon. |
