$400 valve job
$50 for new intake manifold
$300 to put the intake manifold in
$126 for new shocks
$39.95 on new window rubber

After having done it a couple times in the '60 I had, I can tell you that it is a major pain in the ass... If I was going to charge somebody to do it, I'd probably charge them about that much, too...
As for me, I'm kinda scared to add it all up, but I'm betting somewhere in the neighborhood of 17k... _________________ -Andrew |

There is something just not right with how much you spent. $800 for brakes? Are they 4 wheel disk? $400 valve job? You realize that most new heads don't even cost that much? And $300 to put the intake in, covered already. What kind of bug do you have? _________________ 59 DD panel. Former Romano's TV delivery bus

well, if this is the way prices are going for work to be done on a vw, im gunna have a VERY successful shop! i wouldnt charge that much to rebuild an engine, let alone a manifold change! that is just insane! i have changed manifolds on a bunch of vw's, old and newer. i didnt have much trouble besides not being able to find the 10mm wrench. _________________ josh, AKA "the infamous josh"

I thinks it's time you need to pick up the Idiot's Guide. You don't do your own work? The rumors are true, working on your VW is not only fun, but for the most part, easy. _________________ 59 DD panel. Former Romano's TV delivery bus

my brother and i do certian stuff but to do a brake job i wouldn't do that because i rather have a professional do it and not have to worry about it. i don't want to screw up the engine and have it not work so i might as well have someone who knows what they are do'n. _________________ 77 Westy - Cape Cod Sage

I don't mean to keep harrasing you but working on your own ride is half of the fun of ownig a VW. I can understand about the engine and tranny and things that are a little more coplicated to work on, but you could have easily saved yourself $800 and done the brakes yourself. It's one of those things that is so easy that no one I know doesn't do themselves. And believe me, some of my VW friends need a lot of help.
Some day you should really take a look at your brakes to see how easy it is. Then eventually you'll be putting posts on the Performance thread asking for advise about the turbo system you are putting on yourself. Once you start, it becomes a disease and all of the sudden your motor isn't fast enough so you tinker with it to make if faster. You clutch feels loose so you get under there and tighten it. Etc.
And I don't care where you live, that shop is ripping you off! _________________ 59 DD panel. Former Romano's TV delivery bus

Damn i need to open up a vw shop around here and im going to charge $300 to put a new manifold on i will be rich |

$2000 for the car (I spent too much on it!)
$1100 for the new engine that I put in after I received it
$90 for brakes and star adjusters
$51 for new gas tank
$120 for shocks
$25 for new fuel guage vibrator
$125 for new headliner
$140 for the carb
$40 for a used DP intake
$60 for two fuel pumps (first one leaked)
Many $$$$ for sandpaper, primer, and paint..... approx. 400 bucks.
So that adds up to.... about 4200 bucks for a 74 fatchick.
But, I did it all myself, except the headliner. Not a show car by any means, but it's mine (read: my wife's!), and we love it.

I spend $200 to $500/month on my 2 ACVWs, I stopped counting long ago, my next upgrade will be 15" Rhein wheels/tires for my Westy ... around $1200. |

I'm about 9k into the Westy (8k more to go) and 6k into the oval (8k more to go).
I'm not keeping receipts. It takes some of the sting out of the expenditure. |

$23,000 on a fat chick
It does include new pans, new luggage sheet metal, new A/C, 4 wheel disc brakes, new paint (PPG), and new everything else.
But I do not care, it is the best car ever. I no longer drive my 2002 Jaguar (sold it) and I am thinking of selling my 2004 Corvette since I do not drive it either. None of my coworkers understand it (neither my wife although she accepts it).
I would do it all over again (except on an 55 oval). |
