|

Hello!
I'm looking into buying a street legal sandrail.
My Insurance (USAA) says they won't insure it because "It's too low for other drivers to see"
To which I said, "What about corvettes and Ferarri's?"
To which they said, "uhhhhhhh"
I think they just couldn't find "sandrail" in thier computer.
Anyhow. What insurance do you guys use for your street legal sandrails?
Thanks!

just tell them its a "kit car" built out of a volkswagen. dont use the word sandrail or dune buggy. let them see it for themselves and make a decision _________________ OGST | CU05 | OGJHC

My old street legal single seat rail was registered and insured (liability only) in California as a 1974 special construction VW. _________________ Prosit!

Thanks all.
I have not bought one yet. I'm holding out for one with a title and an established VIN. My insurance kept asking for a VIN.
My father went through hell getting a VIN on a chopper he built. I don't want to go through the same hassle.

American Family insured mine with no problems at all. Matter of fact, it is insured for full coverage.

If you plan on street driving/....put the front fiberglass pieces on it --- will be much easier to get insurance on.
Don't use 'offroad, buggy etc" when you describe it.

I talked to my insurance agent about this...what they told me is if you conveniently leave out that it is a "modified body" or "constructed" vehicle, they may issue a policy (i.e. for a '65 Beetle when it's a frame rail)...but if something happens, they'll find out and would not pay any damages out.
Something to be careful of...the places I talked to wanted pictures of the vehicle anyway. _________________ Thinking about joining the Army? Check out http://www.armybct.com/ -- get "no BS" answers to your questions! We care! |

I Have USAA as well, and had the same issue... I went with Progressive for my 2 seater rail in AZ. It was the only car I had with them. They took a look at the car and said "cool. Let's go write up the policy!"..
Can't beat that..
Jumpmaster also has a great point with the payout issue, if you have "mislead" the insurance co on the type of vehicle. Not a good situation if your at fault.... I'd hate to bang up a high dollar luxo ride with a $3K buggy and have your insurance not cover anything... $$$$ OUCH!!!$$$$ _________________ '74 Thing, "Our Thing"....
