I have never owned a baja.I have a chance to get one in a trade for parts I have.I got the parts free so it makes it a free car.It is missing an engine.I have several spare engine from fairly new to severely beaten condition.Do I need a "engine cage thing" or is it ok to just let it hang?Yes I know thats how it is in bugs, but what happens under off road conditions?I want to be somewhat safe. Its a 69 baja heres a link.http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=194732

even with a cage, a type one engine will always "just hang.' the engine cage is trictly for crash protection purposes. now, when you get into engine swaps, that is a whole different kettle of fish.

to protect the bottom of the engine i would instal a nice skid plate, these can be found for relitively fair prices so there cheap protection. im not sure what is on your baja but some kind of bumbers would be good, like tube bumpers. thats about all you can do in the realm of standard add ons but than theres always the custom stuff like a cage that protects the engine thats tied into the roll cage.

il sure theres more but im sure someone else will add on

A cage is the only thing that saved my engine when I was in a wreck. It didn't do much for my head but a least I got to use the engine in my next baja.

I think an engine cage is good insurance to protect the motor, plus it provides mounting points for lights and really makes the baja look kinda hard core. A baja without a cage looks like it was left unfinished, you stare at it and think "something is missing here".

If your going to flip it, I wouldnt worry about a cage. It already has taillites.
