I thought 59s had a crank apron too? Thus the one year-only longer crank handle... |
I have a wierd apron that came with a 60 SC I had a few years ago. It is crank start, but has one tailpipe cut out. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

i dunno. the dates are a guess, and luckily, the really cool guy who runs this site added an "edit" feature for the text of the pics so i can change the info if needed. and by no means am i trying to be the "end all debate" guy on these, because i am sure there are some weird variations, but the ones i took pics of seem to be the most common examples for the vast majority of busses i've seen.
have you ever seen (in person) a 59 with a crankstart and the supposed "longer" handle? i have not. _________________ thebucket: I invested in hoodride, now DBD won't return my call?

2 years ago, i bought a '59 double door panel who had a crank start apron and a crank start nut. Never found the handle but i'm sure at 99.9% it was original to this panel. P.O. never found handle in his garage. |

maybe the "early" 59's still had cranks, and the "later" 59's did not? all i can say is that the one that is pictured (the blue one) is definitely the original to my 6/30/59 built Westfalia which i believe would have had the bastard motor, but maybe not since it was a UT delivery bus (maybe i'll look at the "birth certificate, even though i think it's wrong). and maybe busses in other countries (remember, these are USA busses i'm talking about) had 36hp later into production? they had semaphores and 40hp's later, why not 36hp? _________________ thebucket: I invested in hoodride, now DBD won't return my call?

I've got a longer crank handle.....exactly the same as the early ones, but about three inches longer. |

My early 60 DC and my 60 SC (27,000 original miles) both had/have crankstart aprons, both were original owner (per say) when I bought them and both in what was left of the og paint. I thought that was odd when I got them but never paid attention to it. Noe of my other 1960 buses have crank start aprons, only the trucks, early 60 truck only thing maybe, or changed and painted original color way back when? _________________ Stocking distributor of "The Funky Green Panels"

My 60 SS DD panel also has the original crank start apron. So far 3 of my 8 1960 buses have crank start aprons. I'll have to see what my new to me 60 SO 23 has when I pic it up. _________________ Stocking distributor of "The Funky Green Panels"

in looking at this thread, i see that 55-58 had an apron
besides the slightly obvious, what about mounting location??? my march 58 bus' apron seems to mount about a quarter of an inch to high, the decklid, which i don't thin is right for the bus either fits so tight you can't get a peice of paper around the top or the bottom, and that's with the apron being bowed out. i think it's all in the apron just wondering about mounting location differences.
it does appear as though my apron sits a good quarter of an inch higher at the bottom than the two corners of the bus.
here is a not so good pic of it in place but not mounted
and this one you can kinda see how it does sit higher than the corner...granted the apron isn't mounted, but that's how it sits even bolted on...again, the decklid, shut, has harldy any room on top and bottom, and my decklid is bowed out, that hsould tell you how much smaller the hole is than the decklid.
shot of the decklid (which it has been established that isn't correct either perhaps that's part of the problem)
shouldn't i have a crank start apron??? _________________ proud owner of a defunct 1979 sunroof kombi

whether or not you should have a crank apron was determined at the top of the post .all correctness aside you have other problems as those parts should be able to work properly. your apron mounts most likely are bent plausibly guessing when a rear collision took out your original apron and decklid. |

Hi! I have a 65 deluxe bus and got a 58 rear apron from my friend, it looks like a fit. Is the only difference the crank start hole or are there more differences? |

Just to add to the confusion, I have a 12-12-1958 build date Kombi which I would consider an early 1959 model and my apron has no hole for a crank start. |

Does the difference between stale air and fresh air 40 horse engine tins enter into this somewhere? _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS
