What is the reccommended fire extinguisher to carry in a car? Just in case spit happens. I know Bill May and Glenn mentioned this... I want to make sure so I can buy one this weekend.

Thanks.

I like Halotron I.

It's a "Clean Agent" and leaves no residue. It's EPA, FAA and USCG approved.

but for cheap's sake you can go with a small kiddie abc that's $15-20 at wally world. at the very least you want an extinguisher that does what it's supposed to. messy car parts are easier to clean up than burnt car parts.

Actually the powder used in the ABC fire exstingushiers will bond to the magnesium case and make it almost impossible to fully clean it. It's also corrisive to aluminum.

The Halotron is $85. That's about 3 tanks of gas.

I've never carried an extinguisher in my car.....but I'm very familiar with fire properties from being a firefighter/submariner in the navy....

Why wouldn't you just wanna use a CO2 extinguisher? Acts as a cooling agent too...

The 20 dollar powder version from home depot put my flames out about a month ago....

Drove it home and washed the powder off with a hose and than some spray cleaner..

the powder bonding to the mag.....hmmmmm

you would still agree that a regular abc is better than nothing, right?

and my preventative maintence/constant-obssession-with-knowing-how-my-vehicle-is-performaning-and-acting (a little bit of ocd) certainly doesn't hurt. not to diss you or your ideas, in fact I usually really enjoy your posts.. but I like to think my extinguisher is for when other people catch fire, if the case were to ever arrise

No. If you're not cool enough to run Halo, you should at least be ready to "go down with the ship."

Halon extinguishers are used in places with expensive computers and electronics because they won't destroy the equipment. The only thing is they are for B&C combustibles only.. ie flamable liquids and electrical components. These don't take care class A.. ie your horse hair seats, carpet. If your magnesium engine block reaches it's ignition temp it is an oxidizer that gives off white lava when in contact with water, very dangerous. If your engine block goes it will either take a class D powder or almost a whole tank of a fire engine's water.
