Hi all
I would like to know from fellow bd drivers with original 30/36hp
engines, How slow are they ?
and if you've driven a barndoor with a judson how did this compare to a
stock engine ?
Top speeds with judson ?
cheers

I can tell you that a stock Barndoor is slow. Mine hits about 50 to maybe 55 mph on the freeway with reduction gears and bias plies.
I haven't driven a Judson-ized Bus though so I can't tell you about the difference. My guess is that it might hit something like a 1500-1600 single port type performance, certainly not fast but a little bit more sack. _________________ Please check us out on Instagram at @holygrailgarage

Rob- Get it right, man, it's a "HURRICANE" like the rum-filled Louisianna beverages that you'd have to be drinking till you couldn't think straight when you handed the cash over to him for it. _________________ Please check us out on Instagram at @holygrailgarage

my okrasa powered kombi(1300 tsv) still had less power than a 1600 single port bus...maybe not less RPM HP but for sure less torque which is what you really need in a bus anyway! _________________ DON'T SHIT WHERE YOU EAT! |

I'd forget about top speed with a Judson...it's the first thing people ask and really it's the least important.
The things you really need to know is that it give a really useful boost in torque meaning you don't slow to a crawl on anything but the steepest of hills.
Issues that exist with later splitties like cutting the engine bay ceiling to fit the air cleaner doesn't affect a Barndoor...lots of room.
As for running hot, well they run hotter but not enough to get the green light flickering. Ducting air from the vents onto the blower casing will keep things cool. If you have a good Judson you're not going to be bothered with overheating.
If Judsons cremate engines like some people think, they wouldn't have shifted over 70,000 units in their day.
Ask Julian Hunt if he misses his Judson on his '52 panel? _________________ John.

Hi John
the top speed will tell me how much the bus will gain
I know about what a judson charger will do on a bug
If I'm traveling long distances and cruising at 50mph without a charger
Its a little too slow for my liking only because I think its unsafe on
modern roads
but if I cruise at 60/65mph then thats exceptable
so if in a bug top speed was 80 something mph and I was traveling
at 65/70mph I know there is more power left
I just need to know what extra I would get in a bus
cheers for the input more please

I can comment on this, since I have one. The gearing in mine is stock and so unless you want to wind it out (Which I don't) you're still 55MPH tops. Since putting mine on
there's faster acceleration and the sound is definitely sweet to listen too. I was going up and down the hills in Eureka Springs last weekend with no problems.
I've had the inside of the housing honed and ceramic coated and polished. The outside was powdercoated. The only problem I had was clearance for the original style crank style rear pulley nut.

Well I don't think you'll be happy with the 36 in any case with that scenario. You're pushing a lot of weight and air. You may want to opt for at least a 1600.. _________________ - JHC de Tejas - |

As you all probalby know, the top speed would still be quite limited to the tranny. If you really want to increase your top end speed, you'll need to address the tranny as well as the engine. |

Paint F*up .. It's getting handled this weekend.. One thing at a time. I'm trying to obtain a whole new harness for it. Most places want me to gut the bus first, send it to them then get the harness back.. _________________ - JHC de Tejas - |

Has noboby taken off the reduction gears on a barndoor

Would the reduction gears stop you from meeting the obtainable top
speed ?
without the reduction gears you would get better top speed but be straining the engine on the hills wouldn't you ?? _________________ Luca Brasi's got nothing on me

Well, that post didn't work. I'll try again.
There's lots of barndoors with straight axle setups and even some with later style reduction gears. To get to your original question, I think that a straight axle with a 36HP judson may work but I think it may be labored a bit. You may want to think of a larger power plant or if you want to still run a Judson there's a bit of work in setting up a 40HP judson on a 1600.
The later reduction boxes allow busses to go quite well in the 60-70MPH. _________________ - JHC de Tejas - |
