Anyone ever tried to or know of an aircooled (type 1 or type 4) engine converted to run on diesel? I have a friend thats building a home-built helicopter and was thinking of doing something different for the powerplant and it got me wondering. Can it be done?? Kelly |

yes it can be done. Anything can with enough R&D and $$$. But for something like an aircraft where rleiability is a must, that may not be a great option, why not just use a motor that's already diesel |

I said the same thing, he's wants something nobody has. I suggested a new beetle tdi, but the weight (cooling system, electronics, ect.) is to heavy. Kelly |

Tell him to go for it! Also make sure you have a video camara with a big enough zoom lens so YOU can be at a safe distance when you film that first (and quite possibly LAST) flight! _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

There are aircooled diesels out there -Pinzgauers used to run them - not sure if that's still the case on the newer ones...I'll bet other European vehicles, especially trucks, might have something similar. _________________ <---Air Cooled Search & Rescue Team - STICKERS & T-shirts for sale!

I think Tatra makes diesel, not sure if their air-cooled or not, most of their motors are air-cooled though. But as you said, there are dozens of airplane motors to choose from that are tried and true. |

I think that converting a Type 1 to a Diesel would create a mess. I don't believe that the case, barrels, and studs could hold up to the high compression necessary to burn Diesel. Look what trying to convert a gas engine to a diesel did for GM, and that's a far heavier- duty engine.
Pinzgauer or Iveco would be good choices.
Another thought: VW aircooleds WILL run on liquid propane with some mods. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.
