The curtains have light weight fasteners to secure them in the center. One for each of the side windows and two for the bulkhead curtain. I suspect this would be the same for all '58 & down buses.
You can see the light weight male/female snaps clearly here:
The back curtains on the popout windows had a double snap so you could remove the curtain to open/close the window easily. The rest of the curtains are secured in place by the snap and leather strap.
The bed cushion should also have 7 snaps along the top to secure it to the wall when the bed is folded away.
I have extra leather, snaps, and fasteners on hand, and can easily assemble more kits if anyone is in need. |

I finally got around to finishing all of the snaps, straps, and fasteners for the curtains and bed cushions for this bus.
The leather straps are all cut from the same hide in the correct weight, texture, and color. All of the pieces are die cut using measurements taken from original pieces. ...............
The subhatch prop also has a strap to secure it.
|
We had the og-from-1956 subhatch prop leather strap when we started driving the bus, but at some point it broke.
FWIW, it is really irritating to have that banging around, so you had to be sure to tie it in with the bulkhead curtain.
Awesome to have the leg strapped up!

The two long tent poles hang just inside the rain gutter using two straps secured to the wall.
|
This is also a big deal. Without the straps, we left the poles on the bed. Having to move them if camping w/o setting the tent up was not great. Always had to watch out for them if sitting down. The other poles go across the bus on the floor, these two would always be in the way.
Problem Solved!
The whole bus looks better, too!!! |

Been busy this summer, and this thread has not been updated.
Just drove up to the Great Canadian for the weekend, then zoomed south to see the Solar Eclipse in Salem. There was debate about driving two different directions, but in the end we did both! Both were epic!
I am really glad we went the extra distance to get that two minutes of totality. The partial eclipse was neat, but when that last bit of normal brightness was blocked by the moon and it was a ring of silver in the sky, and the light changed, that was something special. It is amazing how a persons eyes can filter things differently than a camera.
bad blurry photo:
After the eclipse, we went out in the woods and did an epic creek walk, ending swimming in a huge pool under a cascading waterfall. WOW! Brrr!!! Refreshing! Just got back to he campsite before sunset and we all had soggy shoes.
I must have caught up on my sleep, as I woke up before 6 yesterday morning and heated water on the campfire to make coffee while everyone else was still snoozing. (Except the Russians(?) in the next campsite, who had traveled for the eclipse.) The shoes were still drying.
You can see Matt's sandwich toasters on the log round at the right.
After breakfast we drove a gravel road that was a little bumpy Rachael likes her sunroof!
We hiked to *another* waterfall!!! This one was even taller, someone said 93 feet.
Then had a picnic lunch off the road out, and unfortunately hit some Portland traffic.
Got home last night. The bus went well, without issues, maybe 800 miles? Due for a tuneup.
The new curtain straps were still a novel improvement.. |

Looks like a great trip. Those fasteners are excellent, could really use something like that in the SO42 as the bungees don't work great at holding the curtains when they are bunched up and the Hehr windows are open. _________________ RPM=(MPH*336* (R&P*4th*1.26))/Tire Diameter in inches |

Elastic hair bands work well for that. |

The leather straps were a marked upgrade from elastic hairbands. |

More trip updates! Yesterday was the Apple Valley VW Show show in Moxee, WA. People camp out the night before, and again we left a few days early to get in camping before the rains roll in.
Matt Cuddy flew in from PA and jumped in his bus, which we have stored here to promote his jet-setting lifestyle. A friend of his with a 69 westy who is currently in Oregon met up with us a lake south of Mt St Helens.
We camped Wednesday and Thursday there.

Friday we drove up FR 25 the east side of the volcano. Took a road in to see the blast zone. It was awesome to drive through the old growth forest and see the blast zone and continuing re-growth after the blast of 1980.
Cuddy's Jersey Looker:
Then we took another road that should loop us back to FR 25 to get to Randle on HWY 12. It was a wee bit overgrown, with alders leaning in towards each other.
After a while we came to where the road had completely washed out!!!!
We had to backtrack 15-30 miles.

Odd to see people wearing jackets. I'm kind of jealous actually. We're probably two months away before we can break out light windbreakers..

So, due to various delays we did not manage to get to Big Pines on Friday to meet up with the Northern friends and float the river. Actually, we did not get there at all.
We decided not to drive White Pass (4500 ft elevation) in the dark, instead found a campground off HWY 12 at dusk.
Thanks Ryan for the excellent Oregon brew!
We were cooking on the propane stove instead of a campfire. At all places campfires were banned, due to the extreme fire danger. Later I heard that Interstate 84 had been closed because of the fires right there. A huge wildfire is burning about 30 miles from this campground. One to the north, as well as the one by the Columbia River. There was wildfire haze in the air, but not as bad as it had been. Sometimes this summer there has been really smokey air in town.
Saturday morning: Woke up to find ourselves in an old growth forest of mixed Douglas Fir and Western Red Cedar, with the occasional Yew and alder.
salmon that had swum up from the ocean to spawn:
After a pancake breakfast and small hike to the river we drove into Moxee, getting there about 1pm or so, and met up with people there and camped Saturday night at the show. It was great to see friends, even though some had some issues on the way to the show
It was a cool weekend. Generally it is in the nineties or even 100F at the Moxee show, but it was only in the 70s this year. We used the Eberspacher gas heater at night.
This was the last hurrah of summer; it rained on us on the way home. We live under 200 miles from Moxee, just fill the tank before heading over the mountains and it gets us back home. |
